Falling Man by Don DeLillo
finished 5/16 ...... contemp fiction .........
rating 9
This is probably the best 9/11 book to date and
for the foreseeable future as well. The book had all the trappings of the
pre-Cosmopolis DeLillo. There was terrorism, paranoia, alienation, obsession
and DeLillo's beautiful prose linking them together.
Keith Neudecker barely escapes the
first tower when it falls and straggles to the home of his estranged wife and
their child. He stays with her but finds a woman who also narrowly escaped the
tower collapse and they have a brief affair. Neudecker's wife, meanwhile,
tries to come to grips with her losses from the planes and other matters.
The scenes describing the
catastrophe and its resonance in one family are powerful, intense and, I have a
feeling, memorable.
