A take off of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Final
Problem, Chabon even includes Sherlock Holmes as an aging but still observant
character. Linus, a mute young Jewish immigrant boy whose parents remain in
Nazi Germany lives with his pet parrot, Bruno, in a boarding house along with a
parson, his wife and a couple other boarders. The year is 1944 and a man is
murdered oustide the boarding house while the valuable parrot is stolen. The
value of the parrot lies in the fact that he recites numbers in German (and
other things) which gossip has it may be the codes to some German thing . The
old detective, now a bee-keeper, helps solve the mystery.
