This is the second volume of Rolvaag's series which starts with "Giants in the Earth." The boy who his a baby in Giants is growing up in this book. The small immigrant community has church and language issues. It's very true to the times it's about as Rolvaag wrote it in the 1920s about the 1880s. Rolvaag lived there during that time. The books are essentially his experience or from his uncle.
