Time Regained by Marcel Proust
finished 12/13 ......... 20th cent. classic
(French) ....... rating 10
Whew! I finished the entire novel, In Search
of Lost Time (Remembrance of Things Past) by Proust. This is 7 volumes and as
I've gone along I've counted each volume as a book (although it's one novel) .
It's hard to summarize the whole but Time Regained puts the focus back on Time.
Perception, memory, time and change are the inter-related and overarching
themes of the whole. It is
semi-autobiographical but that's not really important. I think it's
self-indulgently long and convoluted at times but this failing is remedied by
the circular structure which is apparent in the final volume. Yes, in spite of
these criticisms the novel (one long story about time) is worthy of its
reputation as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century.
