Massacre River by Rene Philoctete
finished 10/11 ...... 20th century Haitian
...... rating 8,5
Very violent stuff here. It's about the
Trujillo era in the Dominican Republic and its effect on Haiti. Trujillo wanted
more land on the border and he also wanted a bit of ethnic cleansing. Haitians
were "black." But the Haitians were interrelated with the Dominicans there
along the border. It's based on an historical event but told with an eye to
magical realism. It's probably better than I give it credit for but at the
moment I'm just not into reading yet another graphically violent or perverse
novel. I think I need to reread it.
