I think I've found a new series - John Burdett's Bankok stories with Sonchai Jitpleecheep as lead detective protagonist. Sonchai is the son of a prostitute mother and a US Vietnam Marine. He's funny, smart, politically savvy. The books have a fantastical element to them - it's a kind of techie mythological "anything goes" of magical realism (but it's NOT that). Burdett has four books out now and I'm looking forward to them.
