This book is about people first, place second. Owl is a very small town in North Dakota where life hasn't changed much since the 1950s (or earlier). The same people do the same things they've done since high school and everyone knows everyone else's business (almost). But what they talk about, football, friends and boyfriends is the same everywhere. Good book.
