Restless by William Boyd
finished 9/22 ........ contemp spy/detective
....... rating 9
I just finished "Restless" by William Boyd and
incomparably read by Rosamund Pike. Great stuff. I see Pike has not
narrated anything else available at Audible - anywhere else? And this is Boyd's
only work there. too.
About Pike, I
was a bit reminded of Barbara Rosenblatt's reading of Suite Francaise by Irene
Nemirovsky. Pike is an actress but still, she did a fine job - Also, I
believe Simon Vance, Scott Brick, Will Patton, George Guidell, Frank Muller
and Barbara Rosenblatt are also actors. Yes, I think they really enjoy making
audio books because it shows and I think they all do an absolutely marvelous job
of reading. (btw, I don't care for slightly over drama-tizations, either; I
like a good story well read.
:-)
Anyway, I've digressed,
Restless is a very suspense-filled historical novel of British WWII espionage.
The protagonist, Ruth Gilmartin, finds out in the 1970s that her mother, known
to her as Sally Gilmartin, was/is really Eva Delectorskaya, a Russian
emigré and a fairly high-level British spy during the war. Sally/Eva is
older now, and suspicious about things. She gives Ruth, the daughter who is
telling the story, her "memoirs." Ruth is the single mother of charming young
boy and an interesting international life of her own.
