Ultimate iPod Install
Better than BMW or Saab's solution

This is a gorgeous 2002 Dakota Quad that deserves to have the best music playback capability. It now does.
Factory Infinity Sound System with CD player. This is one of the best sounding factory sound systems I have ever heard.

This stereo has the capability to access a remote CD changer (as many new single disc players can).

iPod sits its native cradle which is attached to an Ultimount cell phone dash mount unit.
Ultimount standard installation.

Note: I disassembled much of the mount as I wanted to use the iPod cradle and not the clip module designed to hold a cell phone. I also reversed the direction of the mounting from the default instructions so that I could actually screw the mount to the underside of the dash. The double-stick tape that comes with the Ultimount is not strong enough to hold an iPod and cradle in place

The cradle is powered by a Belkin 12V iPod adapter. I hardwired the adapter rather than plug it into the cig lighter (which I need for my cell phone charger). Remember, if you go this route, the cradle does not pass the audio signal through the Belkin adapter (unfortunately). So you have to use a separate mini-RCA cable to send the audio to the CD player. Also, the volume control on the iPod itself is disabled using this setup.
The cradle has a line out on the back which is patched into the PIE-CHY-AUX digital to analog adapter cable.
The stereo has a proprietary input which needs to be converted to a pair of standard female RCA audio jacks.
PIE-CHY-AUX

Most stereos that take a remote changer will need some kind of adapter cable box like this.

The beauty of this set-up is that the iPod is mounted where the driver can easily see the display and make track changes. The cradle provides power and an easy way to quickly mount or dismount the iPod. the Ultimount has an adjustable ball and pinion type of design which allows for a great deall of adustability.
