About Forcalquier, France:

The town of Forcalquier in Provence is where, for twenty Summers, Rokhaya has lived and painted. It is located in the southwest corner of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The surrounding region is called the "Pays de Forcalquier".

Forcalquier is built around the slopes of a steep conical hill, dominated by an octagonal chapel in the trees where a 10th-c château-fort citadel once stood. This was a strategic site throughout antiquity, and was the capital of the Haute-Provence in the Middle Ages. One of the counts of Forcalquier had 4 daughters, each of whom became queens, and one of them, queen of France.

In the center of town where the main road passes by the Place du Bourguet (market place) is the impressive 12th-c "Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption" cathedral. This huge white-stone building has 13th-c gothic parts, 17th-c bell towers and a 17th-c organ, and replaces previous ancient buildings, showing the first attempt to introduce the Gothic style in Occitanian Provence.
