More convincing data on government schooling

A recent survey by ACT shows that only about half of the kids headed to college are able to read well enough to be ready for college. I'm becoming more convinced that my children will be homeschooled

After having listened to the Basement Tape on Homsechooling on my morning drive, I was confronted by this fact in my email - "Only about half of this year's high school graduates have the reading skills they need to succeed in college, and even fewer are prepared for college-level science and math courses, according to a yearly report from ACT, which produces one of the nation's leading college admissions tests." (NY Times - use BugMeNot to see the whole article - via Chuck Muth's News & Views). I actually saw it a few days earlier on WorldMagBlog, but seeing it again led me to post on it.

It's bad enough that the government, who has been given the sword to punish the guilty and protect us, is using the sword to forcibly take my money to teach a religion (atheistic naturalism and/or relativism) that I completely disagree with and know to be false. It's bad enough that they will only begrudgingly "let" me take my own children out of that system and homeschool or private school them when they are old enough. It's bad enough that they have removed almost completely from my generation the idea that parent's are responsible for the education of their children (no matter who educates them). But on top of all that, the very premise on which the whole sham is predicated is because I am not capable of teaching my children properly how to read, write and do math and it turns out that they are actually chiefly incompetent at doing just that.

The study shows that less than 1/4(!) of kids entering college earned a passing level in all four categories tested - reading comprehension, English, math and science. So they take kids away from their parents, make parents think they are not responsible for their kids education, take money away from everyone and in the four key areas - which they say are the very reason for doing all this - they can only managed to teach 1/4 of the kids to even get a passing grade? Well, at least there's hope for those who fear they are indoctrinating kids into atheistic naturalism - perhaps they'll be as bad at teaching that as they are at teaching reading/writing, math and science.
