It's a girl!

My wife and I found out that we will be having a daughter

Despite a preponderance of anecdotal evidence and wives' tale confirmations, Janet and I found out on Wednesday that we have been blessed with a daughter. All signs pointed to boy, but it seems the ultrasound has trumped them all. We weren't able to see anything on the first ultrasound three weeks ago at the doctor's office, so our doctor suggested going to a local medical school, Newbridge College, where they train technicians on how to perform ultrasounds. It's a win-win scenario; we get a cheap ultrasound and a bunch of video footage of our little girl, and they get a chance to practice on a real, live pregnant women. They also happened to be extremely nice, which is always nice.

After receiving the news, my wife and I went out to the store and bought some clothes for our little girl. It was nice to be able to finally buy something specifically geared towards one sex - a nice, flowery dress that will be perfect for her to wear to church. We had already settled the matter of names, but now we no longer had the if-its-a-girl hanging over the name. God willing, and assuming the ultrasound is correct, we will name her Braelyn Grace DeBow.

Today, I passed the first test of fatherhood - I successfully assembled Braelyn's crib. (On a side note, I said "Braelyn's crib" in the course of conversation while putting it together. My dear wife beamed, "I like that, it makes it sound more real." And she's right - its a wonderful thing to look at the crib and think "this is where I will lay my little daughter Braelyn down to sleep...it's really happening, God really gave us a child.") Not a laborious task, mind you, but one of the first of many assignments I'll be given as a father. We men must be good for something, after all, and my engineer brain is at least capable with a set of tools, instructions, and sundry screws and pieces. My stepdad, another engineer brain, deserves some props as well for helping me. Of course, I'll fail most of the real tests I'm given, and I can only pray that God will use my fumbling attempts to raise this precious little girl and that He'll use them to call her to Himself. Praise God, who has blessed us with a daughter.
