Education?A new study finds that 1/3 of college kids
need remedial classes
A new story from the AP has the following startling
detail:
"A new study calculates, one-third of American college students have to enroll in remedial classes. The bill to colleges and taxpayers for trying to bring them up to speed on material they were supposed to learn in high school comes to between $2.3 billion and $2.9 billion annually." Remember that old bumper sticker that says "If you think education is expensive, try the alternative" - how is it that we are trying BOTH? (h/t Chuck Muth) UPDATE: I would be remiss if I failed to point out that these are the students that actually went to college. One-third is bad enough, but the number is probably over half once you factor in all the kids that didn't make it to college. That means a majority of high school diploma holders wouldn't have learned the basic skills supposedly required in the earning of that diploma.
