Proposition 1A

My take on Proposition 1A - Yes

This is part of my ongoing series of posts on each of the Propositions we'll be voting on. Here is the original post, with my ground rules for evaluating propositions, my scorecard and links to each of my arguments.

Proposition 1A - Yes

This proposition adjusts the way certain tax revenues are obtained from local governments. It requires that certain money be retained locally and not sent to the general state fund. This increases the coffers of the local government and puts a dent in the Sacramento wallet.

I'm voting in favor of this because I believe the more local a politician is, the more control the voters have over that politician. Running for a statewide office requires a large amount of money, indebting a politician usually to big donors. Statewide elections also are won and lost by wider margins, so each persons vote has less power. If I have an irresponsible mayor, its much more likely that I can lead an opposition to oust him than an irresponsible state legislator. I can also actually attend city council meetings - in fact I have before, whereas I've never attended a state assembly session.

Bottom line: More local control of money means more local control of government. Sacramento has been recklessly spending our money for quite some time now, and I don't mind keeping the money local.
