I Thirst (Holy Sonnet I)
Christ's cry of "I Thirst" tells us of
his humanity and the weight of punishment that He bore on the
Cross
"I thirst" He cried, and at once
declared
in the midst of the greatest of
afflictions
that He, though divine, would not
be spared
any of the grief with which He'd
been stricken
He who knew no sin dies,
made sin for us
and He who knew no pain, our
pain does bear
as all the while, there rang
out the chorus
"Save yourself, Son of God,
come down from there."
But grace poured
out, like blood from His pierced wrist
and in
this dear sinners, you and I confide
for in
the depths of His sorrows, we find bliss
and
in the misery of His shame, we find
pride
For a Higher Priest than
Melchizidek we have
sacrificing Himself, our
souls to save
