Wide Waters

If you have never toured by bicycle, Wes and I agree, Adventure Cycling is a great resource. The mapping is very clear and easy to follow. We only got lost a few times. When we did, the map said turn right, we turned left. The maps were easier to follow than I expected.

The backs of the maps contain a wealth of information as well. The backs provided information such as where bike shops are. Nothing like having the trip take a turn for the worse mechanically (see earlier post about my rim) and finding out that salvation is a short motorcycle ride away. Locations of campgrounds, motels, restaurants helped with the rides planning as well.

When Wes and I received our maps we spent many hours pouring over them. We tried to glean every last bit of information from them. Being neophytes to this endeavor, going over the maps seemed to lower anxiety levels. Even during the trip, there are many photos of us looking at the maps.

On the back of the New York map was one reference that intrigued us. If you look at the back and look at the camping options for Lockport New York, you will see it as well, Camping is available behind the Wide Water Drive-Inn next to the marina. Hmmmm. We had to check it out. What did they mean by drive in? Do we get a movie? Dinner? Lockport became our goal, we had to find out.

We landed in Lockport late in the afternoon. I was tired, hungry, and unsure of where to go. Map said go right, I wanted to go left. We rode over the famous intersection where two roads cross over the Erie Canal, barely noticing it. We soon found signs leading us out of town towards the marina. We soon found our goal, a long low blue diner across the street from a small marina.

I inquired about camping at the "Order food here" window and was directed to go in and speak to Bob. On my way in to the inside portion of the diner I encountered a young man dressed as a cook. He was not Bob either. Bob was seated at a table speaking with friends. I asked him about camping behind the diner.

"Who told you that?" was the brusque reply. Sensing my options rapidly fading, I told him about the back of my map. "Let me see!" Bob demanded. I showed him the map. He wanted to borrow my map for a while. Worried that this would be the last of my map, I surrendered it up.

Bob had a copy of the back of the map made. It was poster size. If you ever stop in the Wide Water
Drive-Inn, you will see it. Bob did let us stay the night. Dinner was great by the way. The Wide Water advertises "Thick" shakes. When Wes asked if they were really thick, the cooked had one in his hand. He turned the glass upside down for a few moments. When nothing dripped out, he asked Was. "Is this thick enough?"

We were able to shower at the marina, get a good nights rest, and get on our way the next day. The map, Wes, Wes' compass all said go right, I wanted to go left......
