Lo, and behold, it started on almost the first crank! The neighbors ran for cover (I didn't bother with an exhaust system to begin with) so I immediately shut it down and hooked up a pipe and muffler. (And yes, it's pretty stupid to have a little plastic tank of gas hanging right over the exhaust manifold - it could have been a LOT more exciting that it was.) Press a button and hear it run!
