And here is the end result. The dark splotch at the botoom of the photo looks like a hole but really isn't - it's just shadows from some of the somewhat bumpy weld I left there to avoid overgrinding. Given that the worst outcome would result in a new door skin, this project came out OK. I'd been warned to go slow and avoid heating the area which would warp the panel. I used wet rags laid out around the patch to attempt to absorb the heat, and went as slow as my impatience would allow. When I got done, I could detect a slight dip in the area above the hinge, but it might have been there before I started. Enlarging the top picture and looking at the reflection, I convinced myself that it was there before. In any case, it's no more warped than I am. |
