I put in the filler strip. Notice the taped on towels, etc. to guard against slips of the trim strip installer tool. It worked - no scratches. At this point, I decided that having a gap between the glass and the gasket at the corner of the window was unacceptable, and pulled out the filler strip, moved the glass and gasket around till I got an acceptable, if not quite perfect fit, and reinstalled the filler.
