“Taekwon-Do” literally translated from Korean means:
"Tae" Jumping or flying, to kick or smash
with the foot.
"Kwon" Denotes the fist, chiefly to punch or
destroy with the hand or fist.
"Do" The art or the way.
Taekwon-Do... to put it simply, is a version of unarmed
combat that was designed for the purpose of self-defense.
However, it is much more than that. Through the scientific study
of body movement and coordination, intensive physical and mental training a student can attain levels of ability and confidence far beyond their expectations.
Taekwon-Do also teaches people to how to defend themselves and others. It builds confidence, self-esteem, develops self-control and self-discipline. Taekwon-Do is a very powerful martial art tool and therefore, students are taught the appropriate time to use it and more importantly, when not to use it. |
Taekwon-Do does not rely on muscular strength alone to produce power. Smaller people using Taekwon-Do elements of speed, proper technique, and sine wave (body movement) can also produce incredible striking force in all techniques. Also, Taekwon-Do has more kicks than other martial arts. From low kicks to high kicks; to flying or jumping kicks.
Taekwon-Do is the most modern of all martial arts, being developed in the early 1940's. General Choi Hong Hi named the martial art in 1955. Prior to 1955 the name Taekwon-Do did not exist.
Although there are many different styles of Taekwon-Do taught today, our club teaches the original (traditional) style of Taekwon-Do. |
