The three classes of serine ß-lactamases are too diverse to permit valid alignment of sequences from different classes. To determine the relationships among the classes, protein structures were aligned using the VAST program and only those amino acids that were homologous based on corresponding positions within the structures were used to construct a Bayesian phylogeny.
