Another week, a new monthSo, what's new and exciting around here?
*snort*
Hubs is headed down to visit his folks in
Florida this week. I've got one eye fixed on Hanna, which isn't
supposed
to start annoying Florida until Thursday, and the eye's supposed to stay
off-shore until Friday and make landfall in the Carolinas. Hubs' folks are on
the Gulf Coast.
He phoned in from Mt. Vernon where he'd made a pit-stop, to tell me that there are huge caravans of electrical trucks headed south. He'll lose them when I-24 separates from I-57. He'll head to Nashville, they'll head for Cairo. That news will be good for my baby brother's in-laws, who fought a fire started by downed power lines at a neighbor's house during Gustav because the fire department had been told not to respond. The firefighters themselves finally said nuts to that; the neighbor's house was lost but they saved the in-laws'. A 67-year-old woman should not have to get out on a ladder in the middle of a hurricane with a garden hose to save her children / grandchildren's home. Daughter has her first soccer game next Sunday. By some stroke of fate, all of her games are on Sundays this year. By a rather unfortunate stroke, two of them are at 8 pm, including this upcoming one, which with travel time and the inevitable delay of the start built up during the day, means we won't get home until the time she should already be in bed. She'll be a joy next Monday morning. I have to get #1-Son to the DMV to get his learner's permit renewed so he can get on an airplane next week, because he's traveling home by himself from a visit to Cal-Tech. Hubs is staying out there for a business meeting. Hey, at least it means one of the tickets was free, as was the hotel. The week-long East Coast swing next month? Not so much. The Orchestra Parents' meeting is this week to decide where they're going and when -- the Inauguration trip is off, they don't think they'll be able to sightsee w/ all the extra folks in town -- and therefore, how much money I'll be spending. Orchestra Director is pushing for NYC and playing at Carnegie Hall, but he has an agenda: the last high school he taught at will be there too. I'm leaning toward LA; cheaper flight, later date (IOW, more time to get the money together.) They'll be playing in a festival at either place. Don't get me wrong -- it's not like I don't think it's cool to say "My son's playing at Carnegie Hall." But right now it sounds like the price difference between NYC and LA is substantial. Orchestra car wash is this Saturday. The kids each had to sell 3 tickets, which means I've just paid $30 to have my car not-so-expertly washed (Hubs and his car won't be back from Florida.) Because of all the traveling, I'll be missing both the Beginning Day party and the first meeting of the group I took leave from last year and reluctantly agreed to rejoin this year. Nail Tech (president this year) looked all surprised when I told her this, even though I'd been warning her for a couple of months that she'd be lucky to see me there for one meeting a month out of the two. I took a Secret Sister, which I probably shouldn't have because I'm still not certain I'm staying in, and now I need to find some way to get her birthday present to the meeting I'm missing so it won't be obvious who I am. I've also been avoiding the phone calls of the person in charge of making certain there's a house for every meeting, because of that. She probably thinks I'm a jerk. She's probably right. A big THANK YOU to Granny Geek who shipped us green bean seeds from Dallas. They're growing like gangbusters. Posted: Tue - September 2, 2008 at 09:46 AM Home | | View Technorati reactions |
