's bad when your husband complains that you're not posting

Hope everybody who had a holiday weekend had a happy one. Ours is more-or-less still going because Hubs took today off too.

Lots and lots of rain here this weekend, despite the weather-goons' promises right up until Friday evening that Saturday and Sunday would be clear. I understand some levy broke on the other side of the Big Muddy from us... We have 500-year levies on this side thanks to the Great Immersion of 1993. At least the severe weather hasn't smacked us, unlike folks further north.

Last Friday a friend lost a brother, for the second time in six months, to heart-related problems. He was 56; they were supposed to confirm his middle-school-aged kids last Sunday. We went to the visitation yesterday after making a trip out to my MIL's family cemetery during a break in the rain in the afternoon. My friend was born with heart trouble, so I am of course fussing at her to get to a cardiologist pronto. Two brothers in six months... *shakes head*. The brother she lost last December was only 41, and had undiscovered (until the autopsy) valve trouble. Her mama is a wreck.

The cemetery trip... we hadn't been in a few years. Hubs' maternal grandparents are buried there, and his mama's ashes were scattered over their graves. It's in a tiny town, attached to a tiny splinter-group Baptist church, down a gravel road which holds the farm that used to be his grandparents' and the house that used to belong to his aunt and uncle. My MIL never lived out there; she was the oldest of a dozen and had already moved out when her parents bought the property. We took "the back way" in, through small towns completely shut down for the holiday, turning at intersections that Hubs says have not changed in 30 years, flying over hills down two-lane highways with letters instead of numbers (for my Brit friends, think A roads with three digits), sparsely lined with homes that started out on wheels. I am a suburban girl; that landscape is like a different country to me.

In slightly cheerier news, my peonies and poppies are blooming, and it's finally warm enough I've put the houseplants outdoors. I'll take a couple of photos of the flowers if the sun ever comes out and if the rain doesn't mangle them first.
