Why I love living in the MidwestNumber oh-I've-lost-count in the
series
![]() We have some decent barbecue in town, even though we're not known for it like the cow town on t'other side of the state. Our local joint always places in some category at Memphis in May, and one year took First in Whole Hog. They are de-lish. They expanded locations fairly rapidly right around the turn of the century, then a combo of 9-11 and rapidly rising gas prices put them in financial straits. They closed down completely for nearly a year a couple of years ago, then opened up just their original location as a mom-and-pop operation like they were originally. There was much rejoicing in our house when they did, you can bet. I've had my mom and stepdad in there a couple of times, and the lady who takes orders / runs the register has had great talks w/ Mom about visiting grandkids and the like. (On slower weeknights, she's also the one who brings your food and fusses if you don't clean your plate!) We went there tonight about 6:30 pm, and on Saturday night of a holiday weekend you can bet there was barely a place to park. Yet still, with us not having been there for a couple of months, with customers lined up out the door and her taking orders as fast as she could ring them, she remembered us and took time to ask after my mom and stepdad.
