General catching-up

Life just gets busy, y'know?

So yeah, I've been quiet for a while. And after today I'm apt to be quiet again, since I'm going to stay with my mom because she's having her other hip replaced Thursday.

What's been going on?

#1-Son turned 18 years old. It was a quiet celebration -- pizza and Red Velvet cake and presents, and a matinee of Coraline in 3D the next day. BTW, the movie is brilliant. See the regular version if that's all that's available, but see it. M'kay, kids?

We had a late dinner at Liluma for Valentine's Day. We chose off the prix fix 5-course tasting menu, and everything was wonderful.

The kids are gearing up for district Solo and Ensemble festival, which is March 6. #1-Son is doing a movement from one Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites (I know not the suite nor the movement) and Daughter is doing a Telemann duet with a violinist friend. Both their orchestras will give a concert on March 10 as a warm-up for competing at district large ensemble contest the next day. Then of course #1 is off to NYC and Carnegie Hall over Easter weekend.

I'll leave you with another little vignette from the Obscura House-o-Geeks. I was watching the 1999 TV series version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, the one with Richard E. Grant and Martin Shaw, when bedtime rolled around:

Hubby: Time to tuck the kids in.
Camera: Okay, I can pause Robespierre and Chauvelin sniping at each other for a moment.
#1-Son (entering room): Why are we discussing The Scarlet Pimpernel?
Camera: Because that's what I'm watching. Unfortunately, it makes total hash of the original book.
#1-Son: I wouldn't know, I haven't read it. I just know the characters.
Camera: Really?
Hubby: None of us have, except for a certain overread member of the household.
Camera: *is speechless at the blasphemy*
#1-Son: There's such a thing as too much reading?
Camera: That's my boy!
