Weekly bits and bites

What's what

#1-Son made about $150 selling Butterbraid for his trip to play at Carnegie Hall this Easter. Which will take half off of one of the four payment installments we must make. A reminder to grandparents -- all he needs for Christmas / his birthday is help with paying for this trip. Actually, I sold the damn things by taking the sales sheet into the day spa where I used to work. There are a couple of customers there who love the things. I made #1 write thank-you notes to go with the delivery.

My mother, bless, is still willing to stay here with the kids after Christmas so Hubs and I can take a short trip for our 25th wedding anniversary. Thanks, Mom! Now I have to get rid of the weight I've put on since we were in Hawaii a year ago last July. In a month. Of holidays.

We went from Indian summer straight to winter -- 80° F for a high one day, below freezing for a low a couple of days later. Some wretched cardinal woke me up at the crack of dawn last Sunday morning pecking at the ice in the garage guttering. Seriously, how do you say "the bird bath in the backyard still has liquid water" in bird? Insert Missouri-weather cliche' here.

We went to see Quantum of Solace last Saturday night. I'll post a review in a bit, but in the meantime the short version is: not as good as Casino Royale; if you're not a major Bond fan you might want to wait for the DVD.

Daughter had her last soccer game of the season last Sunday. Being in high school, teams in her division have a two-grade age range, but her team is mostly the same girls, all 9th-graders, that she's been playing with since about 2nd grade. It was not the major blow-out season they had last year. They had to work for their wins and ties. I think she enjoyed it more than last year, not because it was harder but just because she's changed some. At least there was less whinging and refusing to attend practices this year.

Flu shots -- Hubs and I are getting ours tomorrow; I need to call the pediatrician and see if I can get the kids in next Wednesday morning before we go to Mom's for Thanksgiving. With an asthmatic in the house, they are a necessary thing for all of us. And they do seem to work -- since we've been getting them I think the only one of us who's had anything approaching influenza is maybe what #2-Son had last winter, and that was a mild case that the rest of us managed to avoid catching from him. He's known for catching some things he's had immunizations for anyway -- he had the chicken pox (also a very mild case) despite the Varicella vaccine. And neither of the other two caught it from him, even though #1 received the vaccination at the same time.

Hubs is headed for Hawaii on Saturday morning. Nineteen hours travel for a three-hour meeting. At least the company was willing to fly him out a day earlier than absolutely necessary so he'll get a little beach time on Sunday.

Meanwhile this weekend the kids and I will be ushering for St. Louis Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. #2 will attend also, as he's familiar with the play from reading it in Language Arts class last year. I get to see it twice since Hubs got called away. It's got a couple of actors -- including the one who played both Antipholus roles -- in it that were in Comedy of Errors that haven't been back in town since then. I'm excited to see them.

That's all the news from Casa Obscura that I can think of at the moment...
