I'm here and then I'm gone

Various bits and bobs

Mom's hip replacement appears to have been a rousing success. She was walking around the whole orthopedic ward about 36 hours after the surgery, and went home on Monday. The home nurse could not justify having either nursing care nor Physical Therapy come out to the house because she's doing so well. I'm going back down there tomorrow morning, after I throw the kids out of the house, so I can visit with Chicken Without a Head, whom I have not seen since last Christmas. It'll be a quick visit because I have to be back up here Sunday after lunch for a baby shower.

In other news...

Orchestra concert tonight. Daughter's first as a high schooler. Yes, GPs, photos will be made. There's supposed to be a seniors' parents meeting afterwards, but as I'm on my own in town at the moment I don't know how #2-Son will tolerate that. Guess I'll just have him bring his DS. Concert's supposed to be over about 8:20 pm, but with the clean-up and meeting afterwards, it's gonna be a long evening.

Daughter had a bad day Monday -- forgot her viola after school, ran like a bat outta hell to get it from the far end of campus and make the bus, fell and whoppered-up the hinge to one earpiece of her glasses. Then at All-Suburban Honors Orchestra tryouts, she fumbled a passage in her solo and one of the judges dismissed her before she could start back up. We weren't really expecting her, a freshman, to make it this year, but to not get all the way through the try-out was not a fun time.

And to top it off, I can't get her to the damned optometrist to get her glasses repaired, either. She really needs new ones anyway; both she and #1-Son's yearly checkups got lost in last winter's flurry of activities.

I have to get out to the Flats today to get the baby shower present and make a pass through Sam's Club (jeebus, we go through eggs in this house!) and of course it's bloody raining. At least I got the groceries bought yesterday when it was just windy.

I wish it would haul off and just stay cold. I've got the boys whining at me to let them wear shorts (in November, in the midwest? No) and I'm tired of swapping the central air back and forth between the A/C and the furnace twice a day (asthmatic in the house -- we don't open windows.) And packing for the runs down to my mom's gets very interesting.
