Here we go....
The last rehearsal week
So, Monday we got costumes and yesterday
(Wednesday) was our first day in makeup. Tuesday we got a foot of snow and the
director wrecked her car and her glasses and called off rehearsal. Probably for
the best. I'd put on my makeup at home Tuesday before rehearsal was cancelled;
Daughter saw me for the first time as she was coming up the basement stairs and
I thought she'd fall back down them. It's "street" makeup, but it's
heavy.I have a pretty costume
in red and gold and plum; trousers in a striped paisley-ish pattern, a very thin
cream linen tunic and a heavy coat in a wide ombre-stripe lined in a floral
(including the pointy 3/4 sleeves -- damn, it's hot.) Sparkly gold sandals and
belt. We found a mini-glengarry in yellowish-gold and a sheer yellow scarf to
go under it for my head. For anybody expecting period-correct costuming, forget
it. This is a comedy, not a history lesson, and it's damned hard to act with a
scarf across your face.
The set is very, very plain -- three
house-fronts in grays and browns and a couple of gray columns -- meant to
backdrop rather than compete with the very, very bright costumes. The director
said back in January that the idea was sort of a children's pop-up book. I
don't know if I'd call it that, but it is very minimalist as the sets usually
are for this company.
On a personal note: I was a good
mommy and did not go to O'Connell's after
rehearsal last night, even though I was starving and Robert (affectionally known
as "Sir Robert" because he speaks with a Beeb-presenter accent and
he's been nominated for a couple of Klines) was buying the
first round.
