Bits and Bites

Notes and peeves

Zipper-locking plastic bags are nice, and it's great that the industry is using them for packaging. But I hate it when 1) they put the zipper on (what is, by the direction the bag is printed) the bottom of the bag -- especially when you don't notice the zipper and slice open the top of the bag -- and 2) when the plastic the bag is made of is so thin that it pulls away from the zipper before the zipper parts separate when you're trying to get the zipper to open. The bag for the tortillas I use to make my kids' lunch wraps has both problems. I only opened them on the wrong end once, but no matter how careful I am I end up yanking part of the bag away from the zipper before I get the blasted thing to open.

My kids love breakfast breads. Daughter especially has gone off cereal of late. But full-sized bagels are very high in calories, twice as bad as a bowl of cold cereal, plus they'll want to spread something on them. And try telling an autistic he can only have half a bagel... it's not going to fly, trust me. But I found a huge bag of Sara Lee mini-bagels at the warehouse store, and they've got better nutrition stats than a bowl of cold cereal. Strangely enough, nobody gave me any grief about how little they were and asked for a second one. Cool.

Because I'm living on (a modified version of) the South Beach diet, I'm drinking V-8 for breakfast instead of fruit juice. Daughter came downstairs to pack her stuff up for school, gave me a hug, sniffed, and said, "Have you been drinking tomato juice? No kiss for you." Well!

I'm beginning to dread the aftermath of going to my sorority meetings. I eat the high-carb stuff put out for refreshments, then I get home and to bed very late. Double trouble the next morning: lack-of-sleep- and carb-hangovers. Blech.

No clue why: I've had Catch a Falling Star running through my head while I made breakfasts and lunches this morning. Perry Como. Thank you, Captain Kangaroo, for a nice grounding in the classics. It replaced The Cure's Friday I'm in Love, which I caught trouble from the kids for singing.

Do you have a pocket full of starlight?
