What I really said was...

I wouldn't get harsh on Galactica. Well, I haven't yet...

So, Jim Henley says I promised harshness re Battlestar. Nah… I just thought he was delving way too deeply into the supposed subtle links in the Feb. 11 ep. And I told him so:

Re: most of your "then I wondered" about subtleness this ep-- while JMS may have been writing subtleties into B5, or at least claiming he had after the fact when some fanboy pointed them out, I've yet to see suchlike in BSG. I find it to be pretty smack-you-over-the-head when it wants to make a point. It tends to be rather like I am with my cat when I want him to see something: I end up grabbing his head and sticking his nose in it. And I'm afraid I react to BSG doing that the same way my cat reacts to me. I take insult at it, even if it was something I would want to know about. So no, I don't think they're being subtle, just lucky. My feeling is that with BSG most of the time a cigar is just a cigar (gifts to Starbuck excepted -- notice that no female ever brings her one?).

I am in complete agreement about there not being enough about the Sarge to show us why she ripped into Adama so quickly. Did that particular explosion affect her personally and deeply? Did she have some previous major personal grief with the enemy, other than what every military combatant has gone through? Does she have bad history with Adama or Jr., or command staff in general? Yes, the Caprica scenes could have been lost to explain this. But I'm sure there's some upper-level type that thinks we'll forget that story line if we don't see it every week.
