K.S.H.S.A.A. Required Music List Information

In the Spring of 2000, use of music on the KMEA Music List at KMEA Band Music Festivals will be required. The details of selecting and using music from the list follows:

The KSHSAA Music Manual contains additional information concerning regulations and guidelines for KSHSAA State Music Festivals- Large Groups.

• Concert bands shall be required to perform at least two different compositions, each by different composers, one of which shall be from the Required Music List.
• The required composition must be identified by the KSHSAA Code # on the festival entry form.  Important Note:  This code is not currently posted on this site.  Please refer to the KSHSAA Required Music List Manual for the number.
• Concert bands, with their principal's consent, may request permission to perform literature from one classification lower than the required level.  The request procedure is printed on the state entry form.
• The school's second designated band may perform music from one classification lower than their first concert band.
• Classification Requirements: 

            Classification                                   Required Performance Level

            1A and 2A                                         Level 2 or Above

            3A and 4A                                         Level 3 or Above

            5A and 6A                                         Level 4 or Above

NOTE:  School bands not meeting the music literature list requirements will not be allowed to perform.  If discovered during or after the performance, "Comments Only" will be recorded.  A letter of noncompliance will be mailed to the school's principal.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) as recommended by the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) has adopted this Required Music List for the KSHSAA State Music Festivals- Large Groups.   The Required Music List identifies quality literature which music educators believe should be rehearsed and performed to present adequate and educational music performances.

The Required Music List will be  updated every three years by KSHSAA and KMEA with revisions provided by the Kansas Bandmasters Association.  The first revisions was in place for the 2002-2003 school year.
