Biography

Yoshihiko Baba is a Visiting Researcher at Ritsumeikan University. He is also a part time lecturer in essay writing (English and Japanese). He gained his BSc from Kyoto University and MPhil from Bartlett School of Planning, UCL.

Baba’s current research topics include sustainable development, urban design, and ‘machizukuri’ (which literally means town-making in Japanese). His PhD thesis is on machizukuri in Japan as community-oriented approach to development. In his thesis, Baba attempts to identify machizukuri activities in Japan as good practices comparable to new urbanism, urban villages, and compact city in the context of global discussions on sustainable cities. Emphasis is upon the process of achieving sustainable urban form, rather than urban form itself.

Before he came back to academia, Baba has worked in the built environment for four years in Japan. He has worked at private companies as well as Kyoto Center for Community Collaboration. He also volunteers many projects, including Rissei District Machizukuri Committee, and the Clinton Climate Initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation. Baba is also a supporter of Free Software and has volunteered at Tokyo Linux Users Group and Fink Project.
