1977-1986: Return To White-On-Blue Plates
In 1976 the state began to remanufacture white-on-blue markers made of aluminum that were very similar to those produced during 1965 1974, though the slogan “CONSTITUTION STATE” was retained from the Polyvend style. The white letters and numbers were put on with a paint that contained reflective material for greater nighttime visibility. These markers were produced at the Cheshire facility that continues to be the main production location to this time.
For new registrations the markers issued from 1977 until 1980 ran from TR 1000 through ZF 9999. Numbers ZA 1000 through ZF 9999 had been issued earlier so production picked up again with ZG 1000 continuing to ZZ 9999.
In July 1980 the state legislature passed a cost-cutting measure that called for only one marker being issued for new passenger registrations. The DMV took the opportunity to start a new numbering series of three digits followed by a dot and three letters. The first of these new markers issued was 100.AAA and the series ended with the last of the single plates being 999.EVX.
In 1981 the DMV began the practice of two-year registrations for passenger vehicles.
