1932-1936: Marker Size Standardization

For 1932 the DMV standardized the size of all passenger markers at 9 1/4 inches by 6 inches.  Registrations with five and six digits and letter prefixes followed by more than three digits were discontinued.  This meant that the highest all-digit marker would be capped at 9999 and this practice continued until 1953.  All former registrations over 9999 were issued new markers now composed of one or two letters stacked vertically on the left side with one to three numbers to the right.  The abbreviated state name and the year continued as before on the bottom of the marker.  New passenger vehicle registrations for 1932 through 1953 were issued new markers having the letter(s) prefix.  Sometimes they were assigned based on the geographic area and sometimes randomly.  The prefix letters themselves have no specific meaning or indicate any special type of use.

The basic size and format of these markers would continue in use through 1956 though there were many variations in the structure and usage of letters and numbers during that period.
