IPCura Announces the Most Valuable Patents in 2003


Abstract
An IP Consulting firm named IPCura has released a report detailing the most valuable patents thus far in 2003. The top 20 according to the website are:

The problem with this is that no where on their site do they actually mention how they came up with this ranking or how they do their scoring. The entire effort is meant to promote the sale of a $999 report that outlines different companies and industries and rank their portfolios. Without a clearer understanding of the methodology behind the scores it is hard to say how valuable this information is.

MicroPatent Announces the Release of Aureka 9.0, Enhancements to PatentWeb and a New Alerting Service


Abstract
MicroPatent announced that as of Sunday, June 1st 2003 the new Aureka 9.0 service was available for existing Aureka customers. Enhancements in version 9.0 primarily are associated with the addition of MicroPatent's patent databases and Boolean searching to the system. Additional enhancements involve the use of non-Aureka (otherwise known as corporate documents) data sources in ThemeScape maps.

On the PatentWeb side, documents can now be downloaded in XML format.

M-CAM Announces Study on Litigation Risk Classification


Abstract
During the 2003 PIUG meeting I spoke with David Martin about a study M-CAM conducted with the University of Virginia examining factors that correlate to future patent litigation. The study claims that use of M-CAM's risk classification identified patents that were ten times more likely to be the subject of future litigation than other documents.

Call for Proposals: 2003 PIUG Northeast Meeting


Abstract
Program Chair Amy Dasch has released a call for proposals for the 2003 PIUG Northeast Meeting schedule for October 8th in Iselin, New Jersey. Interested individuals should send their proposals to Amy Dasch (amy.dasch@genzyme.com). The deadline for submissions is July 15th and suggested topics include Patent Information as Due Diligence for Business Development and Tools and Techniques for Patent Searching.

Part 1 of Patinformatics Article Appears in SCIPOnline


Abstract
A version of the Patinformatics: Identifying Haystacks from Space article that I wrote and published previously has been re-worked for the competitive intelligence community and Part 1 (there will be three parts when finished) has been published in the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professional's (SCIP) online journal, SCIPOnline.

CHI Research and MIT Produce 2003 Patent Scorecard


Abstract
The annual patent scorecard produced by CHI Research was published by MIT in their Technology Review publication. A PDF file containing the top companies for 2003 and an Excel spreadsheet for companies divided by sector can be downloaded here . The scorecard claims to be based on a number of factors beyond simple "patent count". These include: Technological Strength, Current Impact, Science Linkage and Technology Cycle Time.

Meeting Announcement: 2003 Northeast PIUG Workshop -- October 8th


Abstract
Not nearly as large as the Annual meeting (but still usually attended by 150 or so people), the Northeast PIUG meeting is a long standing and informative event for the patent information community. The event is typically conducted in a single day but this year the planning committee is expanding coverage by including pre and post meeting workshops. More information will be posted later when the theme and call for papers is announced.

Abstract
From the people who brought us patentvaluepredictor.com there is now an additional service that values individual pre-grant US patent applications as well. StockPricePredictor, LLC seems to be the name of the overriding organization with the patent valuation services being some of the products.

Attended Day 1 (Monday May 5th) of 2003 PIUG Annual Meeting


Abstract
The 2003 Patent Information Users Group (PIUG) Annual Meeting was held in Chicago with the theme of Patent Analysis. Day One of the meeting featured sessions on Patent Analysis for R&D Strategic Technical Planning and Patent Analysis for Legal Groups. Talks were presented by participants from Vertex Pharmaceuticals, WHU, Rohm & Haas, 3M, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Ciba Vision, The IPI Institute, Quisitor, Pfizer and the European Patent Office.

"Patinformatics: Patent Analysis for Fun and Profit" Workshop Conducted to Kick-Off 2003 Patent Information Users Group Annual Meeting


Abstract
On May 3rd, 2003 the inaugural journey of my full-day workshop on patent analysis philosophy, personal experience and tools based case studies was conducted with an audience of 45 people to start the 2003 PIUG Annual Meeting. With the exception of a few technical difficulties the event went off smoothly and the initial feedback has been quite positive.

Abstract
On May 5th, 2003 during my talk at the Patent Information Users Group meeting I officially introduced the world to Patinformatics.com. Intellectual Assets Management: From Patent to Knowledge Paper Appears in World Patent Information


Abstract
The June 2003 issue of World Patent Information contains a paper from an Italian group which has put together a patent collection and analysis tool that they are calling ArchIPat. The software was developed by an academic spin-off within the AREA Science Park of Trieste. A user can conduct a search using the system and select which patent provider they would like to have the data downloaded from. Once retrieved ArchIPat will create a relational database from the data (in either Oracle or Access format) and allow the user to analyze the data using various text and data mining methods.

Improved Feature Selection Approach TFIDF in Text Mining Paper Discussed


Abstract
This paper, appearing in the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Machine Learning and Cybernetics, discusses the TFIDF scoring method and suggests an improvement which increased the success of classification using a Vector Space Model (VSM) and Naive Bayse Classifier.

SAS Offers PIUG Members Free Trial of Patent Discovery Service


Abstract
Walter Teague of SAS send an email to the members of the PIUG mailing list offering to let members have a free trial of their Patent Discovery Service powered by M-CAM . In a somewhat surprising move SAS has also signed up to be a sponsor of the 2003 PIUG Annual Meeting.
