Arthrocare Corporation The problem with this is that no where on their site do they actually mention how they came up with this ranking or how they do their scoring. The entire effort is meant to promote the sale of a $999 report that outlines different companies and industries and rank their portfolios. Without a clearer understanding of the methodology behind the scores it is hard to say how valuable this information is. MicroPatent announced that as of Sunday, June 1st 2003 the new Aureka 9.0 service was available for existing Aureka customers. Enhancements in version 9.0 primarily are associated with the addition of MicroPatent's patent databases and Boolean searching to the system. Additional enhancements involve the use of non-Aureka (otherwise known as corporate documents) data sources in ThemeScape maps. On the PatentWeb side, documents can now be downloaded in XML format. During the 2003 PIUG meeting I spoke with David Martin about a study M-CAM conducted with the University of Virginia examining factors that correlate to future patent litigation. The study claims that use of M-CAM's risk classification identified patents that were ten times more likely to be the subject of future litigation than other documents. The June 2003 issue of World Patent Information contains a paper from an Italian group which has put together a patent collection and analysis tool that they are calling ArchIPat. The software was developed by an academic spin-off within the AREA Science Park of Trieste. A user can conduct a search using the system and select which patent provider they would like to have the data downloaded from. Once retrieved ArchIPat will create a relational database from the data (in either Oracle or Access format) and allow the user to analyze the data using various text and data mining methods.
