Intellectual Assets Management: From Patent to Knowledge Paper Appears in World Patent Information
Abstract
The June 2003 issue of World Patent Information contains a paper from an Italian group which has put together a patent collection and analysis tool that they are calling ArchIPat. The software was developed by an academic spin-off within the AREA Science Park of Trieste. A user can conduct a search using the system and select which patent provider they would like to have the data downloaded from. Once retrieved ArchIPat will create a relational database from the data (in either Oracle or Access format) and allow the user to analyze the data using various text and data mining methods.

Improved Feature Selection Approach TFIDF in Text Mining Paper Discussed
Abstract
This paper, appearing in the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Machine Learning and Cybernetics, discusses the TFIDF scoring method and suggests an improvement which increased the success of classification using a Vector Space Model (VSM) and Naive Bayse Classifier.

Flawed “Growth of Embedded Software Related Patents” Paper Appears in June 2003 Issue of the Journal Technovation
Abstract
Authors Douglas McQueen and Henrik Olsson have published a study of the growth of embedded software related patents in the June 2003 issue of the journal Technovation. Unfortunately, their methods are highly questionable and the dataset they used to perform the analysis is probably highly flawed.

Wiki Article Appears in April 2003 Issue of Searcher Magazine
Abstract
Wikis are open source constructs for sharing information amongst a dispersed community of users. Short on style and long on substance, pages on a Wiki can be edited by any of the participants and are meant to gather and record the consensus of a community on a topic or project. They could represent the next step in internet collaboration and sharing, taking the place of email and discussion lists. An article in the April issue of Searcher provides a large number of Wiki links and a detailed discussion on the topic.

Patent Information User Group (PIUG) members Amy Dasch, Heahyun Yoo, Robert Austin and myself were interviewed for an article on searching and analyzing gene patents entitled, "Lacking a One-Stop Shop for Patent Sequences, IP Pros Turn to Bioinformatics", that appeared in the BioInform newsletter.

Barron's Online Article on Patent Attacks on Big Pharma
Abstract:
The Eli Lilly patent on Zyprexa has come under attack before it is due to expire in 2011 based on allegations by Ivax that Lilly misguided the USPTO with regards to the compound's novelty over previous compounds. Lilly claimed that the new compositions had unexpected benefit with regard to increased cholesterol levels in the users.
