Data Mining: A Call to Action from Intelligent Enterprise
Magazine
Abstract:This article contains a very interesting side bar entitled
"Data Mining: A Quick Tour" . The article itself is not have as interesting as the side bar which looks at the steps necessary for a successful data mining project.
The April 5th, 2003 issue of Intelligent Enterprise contained an article entitled,
"Data Mining: A Call to Action" by Michael Gonzales. A side bar from the article on the steps involved in conducting data mining projects was much more interesting in my opinion and reminded me a little of the steps I have laid out in the linear law of patent analysis. The steps mentioned in the article include:
1. Define a precise definition of the business issue being addressed.
2. Map issues to mining data.
3. Source and preprocess data.
4. Explore and evaluate data.
5. Choose your mining technique.
6. Interpret results.
7. Deploy results.
Compare this to what I have written before:
0. Prepare a tool kit of available analysis tools.
1. Understand the need behind the need.
2. The need drives the question.
3. The question drives the data.
4. The data drives the tools.
5. Intelligence that is used in conjunction with a business becomes actionable.
Gonzales' side bar on data mining does a very nice job of providing additional details on each of the steps and I encourage interested readers to read the full-text
online .
