IPCura Announces the Most Valuable Patents in 2003
Abstract
An IP Consulting firm named IPCura has released a report detailing the most valuable patents thus far in 2003. The top 20 according to the website are:
1. US 5742905 Personal Communications Internetworking Bells Communications Res Inc.
2. US 5608786 Unified messaging system and method Alphanet Telecom Inc.
3. US 5643826 Method for manufacturing a semiconductor device Semiconductor Energy Lab Co.
4. US 5774660 World-wide-web server with delayed resource... Resonate,Inc.
5. US 5744305 Arrays of materials attached to a substrate Affymetrix, Inc.
6. US 5884032 System for coordinating communications via... New Bruswick Telephone Co.
7. US 5837458 Methods and compositions for cellular and... Maxygen, Inc.
8. US 5862325 Computer-based communication system and... Intermind Coroporation
9. US 5143854 Large scale photolithographic solid phase... Affymax Technologies

The problem with this is that no where on their site do they actually mention how they came up with this ranking or how they do their scoring. The entire effort is meant to promote the sale of a $999 report that outlines different companies and industries and rank their portfolios. Without a clearer understanding of the methodology behind the scores it is hard to say how valuable this information is.

MicroPatent Announces the Release of Aureka 9.0, Enhancements to PatentWeb and a New Alerting Service
Abstract
MicroPatent announced that as of Sunday, June 1st 2003 the new Aureka 9.0 service was available for existing Aureka customers. Enhancements in version 9.0 primarily are associated with the addition of MicroPatent's patent databases and Boolean searching to the system. Additional enhancements involve the use of non-Aureka (otherwise known as corporate documents) data sources in ThemeScape maps.
On the PatentWeb side, documents can now be downloaded in XML format.

M-CAM Announces Study on Litigation Risk Classification
Abstract
During the 2003 PIUG meeting I spoke with David Martin about a study M-CAM conducted with the University of Virginia examining factors that correlate to future patent litigation. The study claims that use of M-CAM's risk classification identified patents that were ten times more likely to be the subject of future litigation than other documents.

CHI Research and MIT Produce 2003 Patent Scorecard
Abstract
The annual patent scorecard produced by CHI Research was published by MIT in their Technology Review publication. A PDF file containing the top companies for 2003 and an Excel spreadsheet for companies divided by sector can be downloaded here . The scorecard claims to be based on a number of factors beyond simple "patent count". These include: Technological Strength, Current Impact, Science Linkage and Technology Cycle Time.

Chemical and Engineering News Article on Patent Analysis Used to Indicate Top Enabler in Industrial Innovation
Abstract
The April 21st edition of Chemical and Engineering News, the news magazine of the American Chemical Society, contains an article entitled, " Chemistry Rated Top Enabler : Chemical Science and Technology Underpin Many Industries, Study Shows". Unstructured Data Management system to ensure discovery and sharing of all FBI terrorism-related information internally and with the CIA, Department of Homeland Security, and other Federal agencies.
Ok, now this is a little scary (just kidding). I mean I am a fan of ClearForest but it is a little weird to think about one of your analysis tools being used by a government agency that would have to kill you if you knew what they were doing. Of course this could turn out to be a good thing as well if the government pays for all kinds of interesting research that migrates into the private sector. This is certainly the case with the folks who bring us VantagePoint.
