Thomson Current Patents Makes DOLPHIN Trial Available
AbstractPeter
Steele and the people at Thomson Current Patents are making the Chiron and
PowderJect portfolios available for viewing as a free trial of the DOLPHIN
(Database Of aLl PHarmaceutical INventions) database and
system.
Peter's posting to the PIUG mailing list about the
free trial involving Chiron and PowderJect's patent portfolio's is
below:"Hello
Colleagues, We gather from the news that
Chiron may be seeking to acquire PowderJect. Though the bid seems to be
disputed, we thought you might like to have the opportunity of exploring the two
companies' patent portfolios, so have set up a one-off search on DOLPHIN, our
database of all pharmaceutical inventions. This search, yielding almost a
thousand references, serves to demonstrate many of the aspects of patent
analysis covered so thoroughly in the PIUG annual conference held in Chicago
earlier this month.
You can take a look at the "ChiroJect" file by
going
to: www.cp-dolphin.com
and entering POWDERON as your username, with CHIROJECT as your password. On the DOLPHIN welcome screen hit "COMPANY", then on the Company Search screen just hit "SEARCH". From the resulting pick list you can elect to look at the patents assigned to Chiron, PowderJect, or both together.
We note a high proportion of cases having links to products or candidates (almost 10%), and a similarly high level of cases with Third Party involvement of some nature (15%), with particular strengths in anitiinfectives and antineoplastics.
We would be very happy to answer any questions or receive any other feedback you may have about the treatment of patents in DOLPHIN, or the way in which the data are visualized.

I spent some time looking at DOLPHIN during the past few years and Peter and his staff have steadily improved the product and added a number of enhancements to the data visualization capabilities.
One of the new features that I especially enjoy is the addition of meta data as a pie graph within each of the records. By passing the cursor over the pie graph the user can instantly see how many records there are that contain that particular type of data. The pie graph tracks the following items: Drug Length, Term Extension, Additional Companies, Cited by Later Patent, Comment has Citation, Gazette Comment, PFA Abstract, Joint Comment, Related Records and More than 5 Family Members. Being able to quickly navigate to these items and seeing the appropriate portions of the pie in each individual record are great additions to the system.
