"IPCURA ANNOUNCES THE MOST VALUABLE PATENTS IN 2003 Patents from Bell Communications Research, Affymetrix and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co. top the list. San Clemente, CA, June 3, 2003 – Wireless text messaging, DNA chips and amorphous silicon fabrication are the most innovative, fastest growing technologies this year, according to a patent analysis report released today by IPCura, Inc. The report tracks trends in technology progress in different sectors of industry and nonprofit research organizations. “Just five years ago, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and web-related technology were the most valuable patents in biotechnology and communications,” said Anne Y. Brody, Ph.D., President of IPCura. “Now, DNA chips are the principle platform technology for drug discovery, and wireless text messaging has become the most popular way to communicate in the new millennium.” While giant companies, such as IBM, Microsoft and Allergan, remain at the top with the most valuable patent portfolios, early-stage companies are developing cutting-edge technologies, changing the trends of their respective industries. The report also shows that Roche experienced a dramatic decrease in the value of its patent portfolio, ranking from No. 6 in 1999 to No. 17 in 2003, in the category of pharmaceuticals. In computer hardware, Hon Hai Precision Industry, a Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer, has dynamically improved the value of its patent portfolio from No. 25 to No. 14. The University of California, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology have the most valuable patent portfolios for academic institutions. Trailing not far behind, Stanford University (from No. 18 to No. 6), the University of Washington (from No. 39 to No. 8) and Carnegie Mellon University (from No. 90 to No. 17) have aggressively boosted the value of their patent portfolios from 1999 to 2003. The top 20 most valuable patents are listed at IPCura’s website at www.ipcura.com. The patent analysis report, which evaluates over 11,000 U.S. patents from ~1,900 corporations, is an essential resource for patent portfolio management, technology marketing and commercialization. For more information on the report, please call Anne Brody at 949-492-5642 or email info@ipcura.com.
