Arthur M. Sackler Colloquium on Mapping Knowledge Domains to be Held May
9-11 in Irvine
Abstract
I imagine
most of the people reading this will be coming back from PIUG when this
colloquium is taking place but the topic is still relevant and some of the links
on the web page look potentially interesting.
The announcement can be viewed on the
Sackler web page . The meeting overview is copied below:
Meeting Overview
The explosion of information continues to accelerate. Even in limited domains, the amount of available knowledge is usually too great for any one person or group of persons to grasp and utilize effectively. Mapping of knowledge domains is a new scientific discipline aimed at using the developing speed and power of computation to chart, mine, analyze, sort, and display interesting and important aspects of (electronically available) knowledge. Colloquium speakers will present state-of-the-art research on databases, formats, and access; data analysis algorithms; visualization and interaction methods; and promising applications. Using a database of several years of publications in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, participants will illustrate and compare the use of their techniques, algorithms, and approaches by identifying aggregates of research areas, experts, institutions, grants, publications, and journals, by finding the interconnections among these, by tracking the speed and growth of scientific subfields, and by exploring social networking that underlies scientific progress.
A few of the talks look interesting but the presenters look as if they mostly come from the academic world (not that there is anything wrong with this but usually that means industrial application of these ideas are a likely to be a ways off). Perhaps more interesting is a link to the
colloquium from Indiana University that lists a number of the speakers and attendees with their websites. Exploring those links could prove to be pretty educational all by itself.
