I worked in Books-a-Million for two summers and one Winter Break. The above picture is basically is where the majic happens. There is a blurry pictures of me in front of the magazine section of the store.

These are two pictures of one of my weekly manager meetings at Newcomb Hall. These meetings were pretty easy for me, since I lived 50 yards away and could just keep telling myself that I was getting paid for it.

Of course, on this particular night, it was kind of useless. As you can see in the bottom left corner, the manager keys are in front of me (Better shot in the second picture). This leads me to conclude that I was on duty at this point. There were some nights where I would just be on duty for 2 hours, since everyone's schedule was in flux and I had no other responsibilities.

From left to right in the first pictures we have Dawn, (possibly Ben or Nick), Jason, Rachel, Jim and Larry.

I am not sure what Dawn was trying to hand me in this picture. It may have been some kind of interview schedule for next year's workers.

In the second picture, we have Willie, Nicole, David, and Christy. The keys are more obvious in this shot. Christy appears to actually be looking at the upcoming weekly schedule. The important times to check were Friday and Saturday night, since those were rotating. You did not want to forget those.

David is hiding his face from the camera. I took the other picture without the flash to try and keep it a secret, but the click was loud enough, and since Dawn was trying to hand me something, it was not really sneaky.

This is Dawn, Mike, and Arron hanging out at the BA Station. Dawn is the manager on duty, as you can tell from the walkie-talkie and schedule in her hand. I may be taking the picture because I am here to take her palce. Managers and BAs were originally (when I started) stationed in the Information desk, but there was a decision made to make the BAs live up here. I missed them a little, but not too much.

Andrew works at his laptop. I believe this is a late night shift, so there is really nothing else for him to do. You will notice that everything seems clean. At some point, there just is no more busy work.

Candice is hard at work helping the customers in this picture. You will notice she is lifting up pages in some huge note book. Just like my books-a-million job, there was some computer somewhere that kept track of names and addresses, but at our level, our only access was in a giant, probably out-of-date list.

Much like Books-a-million, much of my time was spend setting things up or answering questions. Yet I loved this one and hated the other? I guess it was the people.

Margaret, Willie, Nick, Jim (information is our bag) and some blocked out people are all hanging at the info desk. Given the large number of managers, this is probably right after one of our meetings. We would all walk across the hall and sign out for our 45 minutes or hour of pay. Maraget is very happy to have us back, since she has been without guidance for the last 30 minutes.

Our meetings were late at night. As you can see, the box office is already closed. Although, this picture may have been taken before Shelly moved into her new office down here.

"What's in here?" said David, "Gee, it's been cleared out! There's nothing left. I guess they won't be back for another few weeks if they just cleared it out."

Actually, I do not know who was working at the Info Desk when we did this. I assume that is not David's laptop...but perhaps he borrowed it from someone.

Anyways, the reason for this picture was just to establish a storyline. The second picture is the one you really came to see tonight. Who could have guessed the kind of madcap adventures we would have!

Since we were lazy, we decided to see if David could get to the soda machine on the second floor without standing up.

The verdict? Yes.

I worked here from August 2000 until August of 2002. There were some months where I only worked 0-5 hours (Christmas, early summer of 2001 and 2002), but I basically did 10 hours a week during the school year and 30 hours a week during the summer.

Newcomb consisted of a Game Room, a Movie Theater, a Information Desk, and a bunch of meeting and conference rooms. My job as manager was to make sure all of those rooms were in shape for meetings and events. People would ask for chairs, people would want doors opened, or people would want phone numbers. Basically, it was an easy sort of customer service. We had little control over the Pav, the Dining Halls, or the full time employees on the 4th floor.

Perks included: Sometimes events would have fresh, leftover food or cokes. We got into the movies for free. We got to play pool for free. We got paid to do homework. We got to see lots of people each day. I got to boss people around? Well, I got to make plans and organize people even if I ended up doing a big part of the work.

Everyone asks me what.

Finally,
