Thunder and Lightning

oh now feel it comin' back again

Last night I was caught in the thunderstorm that swept through DC. I think I was about three miles from my apartment when the first drops started to hit me, but I figured that it wouldn't go from drizzle to downpour in the next 20 minutes. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

I've always thought that I could probably run faster and longer if I was being chased by a dog. It turns out that nothing motivates like being able to count the seconds between thunder and lightning on one finger. It turns out that there is actually a "pop" sound before the actual rumbling of thunder reaches your ear. At least, that's what I heard as I tried to jump through puddles and dodge slow moving cars in my mad dash home.

As an aside, I got a request for my favorite songs of the moment. I really haven't been listening to anything specific. I just let the ipod shuffle. That said, here are the five songs from 2005 that I've enjoyed the most so far, here at the halfway point.

Bettie Serveert - Don't Touch that Dial
Bright Eyes - Take It Easy (Love Nothing)
Bright Eyes - We Are Nowhere and It's Now
Decemberists - The Sporting Life
Of Montreal - The Party's Crashing Us

Random Favor

Please?

Hey, if anyone is home around 12:30 tonight, let me know if you can see me briefly on the Late Show with Conan. If that isn't enough of a challenge, I'll give mad props to anyone who can, assuming my face appears in the audience or something, get a screen capture of it. Have a good night!

Hint: Look for me a few seconds after he starts talking about how oddly his hair is behaving.

Visiting the Relatives

. . . for wee must Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us; soe that if wee shall deale falsely with our god in this worke wee have undertaken and soe cause him to withdrawe his present help from us, wee shall be made a story and a byword through the world . . .

Back From Boson. Here is the picture of the gravestone for one of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather John Winthrop.
Grave Stone of John Winthrop

I like to think I am named after John's great-grandfather (my great^16 grandfather) Adam Winthrop. But I don't think my parents knew about him.

That's one great^13 grandfather out of 32,768 great^13 grandparents down. I also know his wife's name, Mary Forth. So really, I only need to figure out 32,766 more. As a note, our incomplete records currently suggest that my great^10 grandmother Mary Lyon may be my first ancestor born in the New World. She was born in Fairfield, CT in August of 1649.

Real Gamers Have Handles

There was a flame, there was a spark
But she beat my high score
So say goodbye, there's the door
I can't see you anymore

After messing around with a service called Flickr all day, I discovered my old aim screenname was available today. I took it in, nursed it back to health, and put it up on a shelf. They say if you love something, you should set it free. I never knew the wisdom contained in that little nugget.

Only the future will tell whether it is with me forever this time.

In other random news, I got a fortune cookie this week that reads "Among the lucky, you are the chosen one." I wonder if that is good news.

Reporting from Akron

You did what you did because a pathetic mythology
is better than no mythology at all.
Back to the old house,
the detectives came by to slum.
But they found no mystery
in these crimes that we had done.
"But what could we paint
when all we see is rain?"
The suburbs are killing us.

Journal Updated.
If you aren't outraged, you haven't been paying attention. I've been writing about what I did in Akron while campaigning for the democrats.

PS. Law school is starting to kick in. That usually means more updates rather than less.

Don't forget to vote!
Voting is Fun!

When I voted for Togo I was nervos. I thought Togo was going to lose. I put my ballot into the ballot box. I was really nervous whhen Mrs. Harocavina called out the books and said how many votes the books got. When it was down to the final two everybody who voted for Togo started yelling "Togo, Togo!" In the end Togo won. ...Annie, third grade

And be excellent to each other.

I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

Stop Gap Measure

In case you are bored

I've been at the Mercury Lounge far too much this week. Thanks to everyone who came with me to the shows. Maybe I'll get around to posting information on each of these events. For now, stare really hard at these miniature photos or think about where I might post a temporary link to bigger quality images. If you are reading this 6 months from now, sorry, but I think that these are all the pictures available on the world wide web.

Stuff

Just to preserve the dates: Nada Surf (The Wrens not pictured) was on 9/08/04 at the Mercury Lounge; Sara Schaefer is Obsessed with You (with special guests Jonathan Ames, Some Dude named Paul?, and Steve Burns), The Upwelling, Dirty on Purpose, and Rainer Maria were BOTH on 9/10/04 at Juvie Hall and the Mercury Lounge respectively; and Bishop Allen and Secret Machines (Tomorrow's Friend not pictured) were on 9/11/04 at Rothko.

AIM Screenname Contest

Rebrand Me

My parents have recently moved beyond AOL. This means that I must move beyond my old screenname, since it was tied to their old account. AOL does not permit screennames to prevent cancellation. Probably for business reasons and possibly to prevent impersonations. Either way, as of Saturday, August 21, 2004, atommoore no longer exists. I have no favors at AOL to call in, so I am going to do the next best thing: Solicit Suggestions.

Contest: If people will leave suggestions in the comments section, I will then create poll that allows people to vote on the screenname. As long as it doesn't seem like there was ballot stuffing, I will adopt the new screenname.

Rules: The screenname must be available on AIM. It must be something I would be comfortable telling family members. I reserve the right to create new rules at any time or cancel the contest entirely.

Suggestions: I already have atommoore2 and atommoore@mac.com registered as screennames. (Yeah, I'm serious. Add atommoore@mac.com to your buddy list and you should see my account). Those are my backups at this point. If the whole thing goes to poop, I'll probably go with atommoore@mac.com just because it looks so cool. So you've got to do better than those two options. If no one submits anything, I'll just do a poll with those two. And maybe atommooreX or something.

I imagine there are only four of you out there who care, but you all spend enough time online that you know how to craft a good screenname.

So goodluck.

Return from the Cville

I'm back! (posting problem?)

Wash Meeting was basically missed, party was attended, grilled chicken was consumed. I saw Super Size Me. It was good and featured "Rock and Roll McDonalds: and the McDonald's next to my law school. Other people went to see Dodgeball. I hope they made it out alive. No one was killed or injured when I played tennis with a guy who was still recovering from some surgery he had in 2003. I played only so that I wouldn't embarrass myself today. There will not be pictures.

I did try out the Panoramic Feature on my Camera. Not bad for my first try. It obviously looks better at a larger size. Next time, I will probably take the pictures with the camera turned on its side so as to get slightly more balance between the height and width. It's going to be great, I promise.

Finding Inner Peace on the Outer Banks

Some photos

Pictures
36 hours ago, five guys and a girl dug a giant hole in the beach. As I sat and watched them slowly sink into the space once inhabited by sand, I couldn't help but wish there was a metaphor that I could incorporate into this post. But I have nothing. Anyway, about six feet later, they put the finishing touches on the breastworks of the hole and I walked back with them to the house, lacking a way to start the entry about the hole...

As my previous post indicated, I have arrived at a beach house in the Outer Banks. I am spending the week with a semi-random assortment of friends from high school and college. There are some people here who would not fit that description, but they paid, so I respect them for their effort. Judson picked me up from my house around 11 am on Saturday and we made good time. May is apparently still off-season, so there was not much beach related traffic although it is in the mid-80s right now. The ocean is still very cold, but more on that later.

For those of you who may have heard the rumors, yes, there were some problems with our original lease. But quick thinking by Brian and Judson found us a new place that meets our needs. The ultimate lesson is that when you have cash, you can usually find someone willing to exchange it for a good or service (Even on notice as short as a week!). We probably partially benefitted from the aforementioned off season status. The schedule of the college student is not representative of the beach-going population as a whole, and I can't complain. Oh, and there is a second lesson-- "Twiddy Sucks." That was an important thing to get on the internet. The power of capitalism depends on future consumers having full information about their options, and we will hopefully impact the marginal decisions of those people considering which realty company to do business with. But that's for the future.

To create jealousy, I will try and make it all sound better than it actually is. This house has, in no particular order, a hot tub, a pool, a pool table, four televisions, and a screened in porch. Not bad in anyone's opinion. To be fair, there are some drawbacks to this particular location. It is about a ten minute walk to the beach, so we only go out to it once or twice a day. There are no linens, so I had to bring my own sheets and make my own bed! I don't even know if this qualifies as a vacation (from a technical standpoint, at least).

But outside of the minor inconveniences, the "Beachcomber" has its own special charm. The beds are acceptable, the kitchen and grill both serve us well. When we are not out at the beach or asleep in those beds, we spend most of our time on the third floor living room. We have watched a movie or two during the lazy afternoons. Two brave Xboxes® have been linked so that eight people could play Halo® at once. It was a thing of beauty for those playing it. Some members of our party claimed to not understand why people would go to so much trouble for a video game. Perhaps even the players did not understand what irresistible force drove them to such lengths, but it was done, and there is no turning back.

I have no specific plans for the rest of the week. I believe the hole diggers would like to repair the damage that time has already wrought on their hole. Since there are some unanswered questions: The hole was dug with three real shovels. Not those little plastic ones, but the kind you might purchase from a hardware store (or in this case, borrow from your parents' too shed.) It took about an hour to get the hole dug, the only thing stopping the digging was the water table. The great diggers were Mark, Judson, Max, Brian, Justin and Chris, for the record. Today we found hieroglyphics on the walls of the hole. It was amusing. If they remain until tomorrow, I will probably get a picture or two. So yes, other than eating and drinking, the only thing I have accomplished was watching other people dig a giant hole in the beach. Oh, and I have a small amount of sunburn on my left arm where I apparently forgot to apply sunscreen. You live and you burn, I guess.

People are starting to grill, so I am going to go out and get some food. Enjoy the pictures. The first one is the hole after little kids started playing with it, the second is laying out at the pool, the third is our house, the fourth is a video game, the fifth and sixth are chilling in the porch, and the sixth is a dinner shot. Hope that helped with the ones that were not self-evident.

The digital camera pays for itself

If you are bored, there is a story by Wired.com about the Pacmanhattan event. If you glance at one of the pictures, you may notice this. I didn't actually charge them for the non-exclusive license, but if the law thing doesn't work out, I have a new item to put on my resume, I think. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

April Update

This was how I won the west
Charity, a joke that friendly cities think that we believe
Or so it seems
We kicked and punched and stabbed to death
And everyone applauded my fine actions I was overcome
You ask me what I've seen
Hate is all I've seen

Hate is in the air
Come on people feel it like you just don't care
Everlasting hate feel it in the people where it's warm and great
Come on hate yourself everyone here does so just enjoy yourself
Hate is everywhere, look inside your heart and you will find it there
You ask me what I mean
Hate is all I mean

Big Fish and Steel Drum

I've beet up too long. Here are just two pictures that make no sense and yet summarize the evening. I did go to see Big Fish (after a stop at Taco Bell for a Gordita) and then have a party up on the 18th floor. Also, I finally got to see David Cross beat the lead singer of Creed in Texas Hold'em. If you aren't organizing a party for 8:00 PM on Tuesday around the finals of celebrity poker, you are not planning your week correctly.

For any clarification, please leave a comment. Both of the pictures involve my friend Jeff, although the theme of the two pictures are actually "Taco Bell under new management" and "steel drum annoys roommate" respectively. That's probably all you need to know to get some enjoyment out of this entry. Good night.

What's that? So I got a digital camera, I have some recordings on the page, and all my old photoshop experiments. I said to myself that there needs to be a place to group these things together. They didn't fit into the old "School" focused groupings nor did they fit into the "Content Section" where I describe activities where I was an observer. Back in NYC

Uneventful day. I rode the train up from Ashland to New York City, quickly left Penn Station on the C train, and then walked to my dorm. I have unpacked, cleaned up the mess my roommate left sitting in the apartment for the past three weeks (milk, trash, dirty dish, etc), and generally adapted to the cold weather.

Here is a picture I took out the window as our train rolled through Washington around 11 am. Maybe if I venture out to Kmart tonight, you will get another image. It is dark, and my camera lacks a tripod, so don't count on anything amazing.

Initial impressions: NYC is cold. Good thing I have a jacket and gloves, right? Yale Club party tomorrow. Moot Court work needs to be done. I am not going to do anything this evening. But I should buy groceries. Nothing exciting happened on the train. Nothing exciting happened on the subway. I will probably spend the night listening to the final four commentary tracks on the Ben Stiller DVD. I am also supposed to purchase the LOTR: Two Towers DVD, but Judson informs me that it is atheist propaganda, so I am worried I will show up on some list. Not really, but that's the only joke I can think of right now. I'm going to get back to incorporating my digital camera supplies into my room.

Reunion!

The Governor's School Reunion from 3-5 today was interesting enough to warrant both photographs and an entry.

I don't know 95% of the people in this picture, so I don't expect you to ID them either. If you can, then you and I probably are not friends. Because you are only 19 and still in college. I like the banner they made for us. Very generic. Will we see it next year? I'm taking all bets. I didn't steal it, so I can't say for certainty what will occur regarding the banner. I wonder who is in charge of it during the school year. I imagine it is not treated like gold.

The class of 1998 was represented by David T, Tiffanie C, Andy L, and me. Not exactly the most balanced group, but it was a party. There wasn't much to do, but we did it all. Of course, since I talk regularly with all of the other people there, it wasn't much of a reunion. I took a lot of pictures, and may put up some shots from the day on a separate page. But only if I find the motivation to do so when I get back to NYU and its super-fast internet connection. You will just have to cross your fingers for that one. But not for too long. I don't want you to get cramps or anything. Also, I'll probably do it or not do it regardless of the way you hold your hand. Unless you are holding a gun with it.

Mark W led us on a tour because he has been working there as a sub and therefore knows the layout well enough to bluff his way though it. As you can see, we found the weight room. David is doing horrible things to that machine thankfully. Other highlights included Schrieber's desk and Wilkes' classroom. The school remains impressive as does the willingness of the PTA to spring for cheese and crackers for alumni. I signed up to answer questions about the school for some kind of documentary. Being in NYC will keep it from being a video interview, which is probably for the best since I do not think I want to be filmed while answering. Rolling your eyes can really make your answers seem less sincere.

After the exploration of the school, I ate at Penny Lane and then went Bowling on lanes at Sunset. Both were good events. I found out someone had abused my elementary school and that Hollins College has a third mini-semester. Oh, and that the deal at Sunset bowling basically gets you three rounds for the price of two plus free soda and popcorn. Greg learned that you cannot trade soda for beer. Actually, bowling taught us all a little something. (This is bowling, not Nam. There are rules.) Here is a picture to finish the journal entry.

Richmond has been a blast. I failed to see one or two people that I figured I would see (sorry Praveen and most of you LJ users), but overall, I think it was a successful break. In rough order of appearance, the first initials of the people I saw while back in Virginia (excluding my family) were Williamsburg (C, J, M, A, J, M, B), (Chesterfield) P, A, (Richmond) T, M, M, A (Nova) M, (Cville) C, K, J, D, C, M, D, E, M, B, C (Western VA) P, L, A, (Cville) M (Richmond) A, D, G, R, F. I think that's everyone important. If you feel that your initial is missing from the first time we met up, let me know, but I imagine you won't call me on it.

The next entry promises to be posted from NYC*!

*even if written on the train while in NJ

Happy New Year

First post! I apologize for the long absence. Things have occurred, but none of them seemed worthy of an entry. I spent New Year's Eve on a farm near Roanoke. I drove long distances and realized my minivan had hit the 150,000 mile milestone. I was in Nova. I went back to Williamsburg. I spend four days in Charlottesville doing everything I did the last time I visited. Nothing amazing, and all done in ways that did not inspire me to write.

So what inspired this entry? I am now the owner of a digital camera, and I have chosen what picture should have the dubious honor of being the first to partially go on my journal. Perhaps later I will tell you more about the camera. Below you will find a image of Phil, Andy, Mark, and Walter outside of their chosen bar. The image has been cropped and shrunk by a photo editing program, mainly because 50 images at the maximum quality would kill my webspace. So don't expect to be able to print out photo-quality graphics from any future photos posted here.

We had met up around 9 to play pool in the West End. No one was really into it (I was watching the Cowboys get their butts handed to them), so "The Playing Field" could not hold our attention long and we began searching for alternative venues. On a side note, before we decided where to go, the cashier at the pool hall was a jerk to us. I wanted to say something clever, but nothing came to mind, so the moment passed. Andy may have yelled something once we got outside, but it did not impact his life in any way. So then we decided to go frequent a place that would serve us food politely.

We ended up going to the pictured fine establishment to take advantage of the 30 for the price of 20 wing special. After eating, I drove home and made this journal entry after selecting the best picture from the night. You can imagine how annoyed my friends were by the multiple pictures I took of almost every event. So, there you go. The End.

Or is it?

Quick Summary

Since I last seriously posted anything, I have done much that could allow me to fill this space with meaningless facts. So here goes. I have seen Bad Santa. I have watched hours of Futurama and James Bond. I mocked my copy of Stargate (who are the Ad-wizards who designed a DVD you need to flip after just 55 minutes?). Having already driven down to Williamsburg, I made the obligatory trip to DC. I watched the UVa bowl game. I got trapped in the obligatory traffic between Fredericksburg and DC.

I made lots of phone calls to people. I emailed others. I told myself that I shouldn't need to contact the people I assume read these posts, since they would contact me. I contacted some of them anyway. I may be seeing Runaway Jury tomorrow with anywhere between 1 and 50 people. I sat in a bar and listened to a soldier talk about what he did in Iraq. I found out that the guy who had once ridden in the trunk of my friend's car is now a convicted felon.

I ate a lot of food. I felt ill for a while. My family was mistakenly given free dessert. We ate at the new location for the Penny Lane Pub. We ate at the Jefferson. We didn't eat lunch on Xmas until 4 pm. Most of my prized gifts still exist in gift card format at this point. My computer bag is in the shop. The gas cap on the car I am using is held on with duct tape.

I could be using this opportunity to work on my moot court problem. I could be reading ahead for my spring classes. I could be working harder at planning what I will do in Cville on Tuesday. I could be doing more research on the advantages and disadvantages of various 5 megapixel digital cameras. I could hit save and post this waste of text.

Oh, and I don't know if I ever mentioned this before, but my law firm sent me a backpack as a holiday present.

The End.

Return of the King

I finished writing a 800 word opinion piece about judicial supremacy at 1:30 PM on Friday. Knowing that it was due at 2:05 PM and it was a 10 minute walk to the Law School, I hit print and stapled as fast as I could. At 1:55 I arrived at the law school to hand in my 3200 word answer to the Constitutional Law take-home test, stapled and everything.

I would have been there sooner, if the elevator in my building had not betrayed me. Having gotten on the 2nd elevator (of 3), I pushed one and it began to travel down. When it passed the first floor and went down the basement under its own power, I remember that yesterday this elevator had been broken. As the elevator failed to open but then began travelling back up the the 9th floor, I thought that perhaps it was still in some ways broken. I was on the phone with my friend Lyle at the time, and I just had to hang up to deal with the situation at hand, for you see, the elevator paused at the 9th floor, but began traveling back down without having opened. Here I was, with my test in my hand, and the elevator would not let me off on any floor. The other girl in the elevator and I played around with the buttons, I resisted the urge to hit the emergency stop, because that might have frozen it until the fire trucks got there. We pressed all the buttons, and nothing good happened. Finally, as we were traveling back down, we kept hitting the basement number plus the "door open" command, and for some reason, that worked. I do not know why, and I do not think that it would necessarily ever work again.

Having lost 8 minutes of my life going up and down in a crazy-vator. I moved swiftly, only having time to briefly pause to mock this exam with one of my fellow class-mates Liz. Having already taken it days before, I'm sure it was tough for her to not spoil the fact that the test question itself had 12 pages of background material regarding the history of the Hawaiian islands.

So, paper turned in at 2, I went out into the city with the luggage I had also carried to the law school. One stop in a convenience store and Burger King later, I was on the A train and swiftly moving to Penn Station. Nothing amazing happened there. I ate my food, I stood waiting for the Richmond bound train to pull into the station. Eventually it did, and I choose to sit in one of the cafe cars, since I could be guaranteed a space for my laptop. Otherwise it would have been a 4 hour train ride with only my walk-man and one mix tape to entertain me. I consumed food and drink, the people across from me played on a guitar, and nothing amazing happened.

I pulled into Union Station at 6:45, made my way to the Metro, and slowly made my way down to the Springfield stop. My dad was waiting there, and we made the trip back to Richmond with a single stop at Subway. We had elected to do such a pick up for two reasons. One, a chemical spill had ended all Amtrak operations between Richmond and DC. Having gotten this news while I was half-way through my take home, I was in no condition to make the best plan. And that brings us to part two, my father so hates DC traffic that we agreed it would be better if I used the Metro to take me as far south as possible. It took me about 55 minutes to make it down, but I think it saved everyone stress. Luckily, I had my walk-man, so I could pass the time.

I got home, and fell asleep. The next day I left for Williamsburg and Festivus. I eventually saw all three of the LoTR movies. Pretty good times all around. Also, I ate at the Mongolian Peking Buffet in Williamsburg, which is always nice. And now I am back in Richmond, (hence the dual meaning of my Title!) and will spend today Christmas shopping and trying not to get bored in Hanover. I imagine the 26-30th will be pretty boring if I don't try and contact people, so I may spent the rest of today figuring out who is around. There's no conclusion here, so I'll just trail off.

The Disgust Scale, Version 2 (Haidt, McCauley and Rozin, 2002)

Please indicate how much you agree with each of the following statements, or how true it is about you. Please write a number (1, 2, 3 or 4) to indicate your answer:

1 = Strongly disagree (very untrue about me)
2 = Mildly disagree (somewhat untrue about me)
3 = Mildly agree (somewhat true about me)
4 = Strongly agree (very true about me)

__4__1. I might be willing to try eating monkey meat, under some circumstances.
__3__2. I try to avoid letting any part of my body touch the toilet seat in a public restroom, even when it appears clean.
__1__3. It would bother me to be in a science class, and to see a human hand preserved in a jar.
__1__4. It would make me uncomfortable to hear a couple making love in the next room of a hotel.
__2__5. If I see someone vomit, it makes me sick to my stomach.
__4__6. I have no problem buying and wearing shirts from used clothing stores.
__2__7. It would bother me tremendously to touch a dead body.
__2__8. It would bother me to see photos of two people having oral sex.
__3__9. Seeing a cockroach in someone else's house does not bother me.
__2__10. I probably would not go to my favorite restaurant if I found out that the cook had a cold.
__1__11. It would bother me to sleep in a nice hotel room if I knew that a man had died of a heart attack in that room the night before.
__3__12. It is OK with me if people want to look at pornography involving animals.
__2__13. Even if I was hungry, I would not drink a bowl of my favorite soup if it had been stirred by a used but thoroughly washed fly-swatter.
__1__14. I would not hold a dollar bill between my lips (like if I needed a free hand), because so many strangers have touched it with their dirty hands
__2__15. If I were properly trained, I would be willing to help draw blood in a blood drive.
__1__16. I think that people who masturbate every day are degrading themselves.

How disgusting would you find each of the following experiences? Please write a number (1, 2, 3, or 4) to indicate your answer:

1 = Not disgusting at all,
2 = Slightly disgusting,
3 = Moderately disgusting,
4 = Very disgusting.
(If you think something is bad or unpleasant, but not disgusting, you should write "1".)

__2__17. You see maggots on a piece of meat in an outdoor garbage pail.
__3__18. You take a sip of soda and then realize that you picked up the wrong can, which a stranger had been drinking out of.
__3__19. You see someone accidentally stick a fishing hook through his finger.
__3__20. You hear about a 30 year old man who seeks sexual relationships with 80 year old women.
__2__21. While you are walking through a tunnel under a railroad track, you smell urine.
__1__22. You sit down on a public bus, and feel that the seat is still warm from the last person who sat there.
__3__23. You see a man with his intestines exposed after an accident.
__1__24. As part of a sex education class, you are required to inflate a new unlubricated condom, using your mouth.
__2__25. A friend offers you a piece of chocolate shaped like dog-doo.
__1__26. You find out that someone you despise used to live in your house, and sleep in your bedroom.
__4__27. Your friend's pet cat dies, and you have to pick up the dead body with your bare hands.
__4__28. You hear about an adult brother and sister who like to have sex with each other.
__3__29. You see a bowel movement left unflushed in a public toilet.
__3__30. While traveling for 2 weeks with a friend, you discover that your underwear got mixed up in the wash, and you are wearing your friend’s underwear.
__1__31. You accidentally touch the ashes of a person who has been cremated.
__2__32. While walking through a park, you see two dogs mating (having sex).

To compute your score: first reverse your score on questions 1, 6, 9, 12, and 15. (That is, subtract what you wrote from 5, so that a 1 becomes a 4, a 2 becomes a 3....). Then add up all 32 numbers, to get a score ranging from a low of 32 to a maximum of 128. Higher numbers mean that you are more sensitive to disgust; low numbers mean you are not easily disgusted.

My Score: 27 + 38 = 65

I remember part of a dream!

Usually I have no recollection of my dreams. Not that there is anything special when I do. Or maybe you can interpret that to mean that my dreams are horrible visions of violence and darkness and I dare not share them with the rational world. Who knows? Anyway, I only remember about 20 seconds of it.

I was walking down a street in NYC, but it was also Richmond. At least I think. I mainly say that because when I passed a Pizza restaurant named Lloyd, I saw my 10th grade trigonometry teacher talking to his twin. Now, I don't actually know if Mr. Wilkens had a twin, but in this dream he did. One of them was obviously the business manager of the restaurant and the other was the host. I couldn't tell which was which, but if I had to bet in the dream, I assumed the one who would know me was the business manager. So I tried to call Judson on a cell phone to ask if he knew anything about my former teachers career path, but my cell phone couldn't get reception (Ahhh, a nightmare!) and informed me that I needed to be "in motion" for it to make a call. So I walked in this little loop, but still, no answer. They never saw me, but the business manager one went away and the host put on a baseball cap while he talked on the phone. Then something else happened and I can't remember. Good times. Oh, it involves your mom. You don't want to know.

Of note in the real world , I did attempt to call Judson last night to figure out why the hell Paypal said I owed him two cents. So that seems to explain the phone and the twins (two pennies?) Maybe the class reference is due to the standard sense of dread that everyone at law school gets post-exam. Sort of a "if I don't do well, I'm going to end up working in a pizza parlor with my teachers." They did give out free Pizza at the law school yesterday. Or not. I'm not here to interpret. Only in dreams!

My Room

This is My Room

Room

As you can see, it was taken on the same day I claim to have visited the Statute of Liberty. Or perhaps I only have one shirt. Left to right in a clockwise circle.. Bed. Desk. Window (can you see the Skeleton that helped celebrate halloween). Clothing pile. Air purifier (it's dirty here) TV. Fan (it was a hot november and the A/C under the window had been turned into a heater by that point). Lamp. Yaffa Blocks. Chair. Cot with sleeping bag. Rug. Any questions? You cannot see the other Yaffa blocks, the closet, and one other chair. I would say I spend 40% of my life there. Mainly thanks to sleeping. If I find a picture I took last year, you can compare my current and former set up.

Thanks to Judson for the picture.

Quick Note

I did nothing today except express my views about the upcoming Washington Society Banquet in the morning. Well, I studied, but that doesn't really matter. Feel free to start a dialogue with comments or something.

Oh, and I made an audio recording about it.

--- Letter about where the party should be -- Proposal: Boars Head from 11pm to 1 am. --

Please feel free to correct me, but I believe you stated that your party location would end our party at 1 am. Assuming accuracy...

First
A party until only 1 am is pointless in my opinion. To begin with, the banquet, with all its events, seems to run until 10:30. Sure we would save time by simply 'already' being at the party, but with a 1 am deadline, I would not be a happy camper. While it might satisfy some other alumni, the idea that the night would be over at 1 am seems kind of boring. All my other reasons are small, because I think this is a total deal breaker for me. If I am coming from 6 hours away for an event that will only last from 5 pm (board meeting) until 1 am, I am going to be disappointed. I also think there is something to be said for a 'transitional time' from 10:30 to 11:30 where everyone breaks up and then re-congregates at the party.

Second
Two drinks? And then I start paying for them? Or wait, I am always paying for them? Also, two drinks will run me 14 dollars? You know, I could bring down two White Russians from a NYC club and possibly save money on the deal.

Third
The issue of designated driving. Could be a logistical nightmare. Most alumni and members will be driving themselves to this event. At 1 am, you would suddenly either be asking everyone to sit in their car to sober up or to drive drunk. Or perhaps you try and get alumni to all book rooms at the inn (I, for one, will not) Given the sort of "make it to the banquet yourself" planning that normally happens, you are going to get cars. And simply having four or five DDs will not solve your problem, because part of the problem is the cars themselves. I'm sure the Boars Head would find it strange if we left 20-30 cars in their parking lot, but the real inconvenience would then be to the people who have to find a way to retrieve their car the next day once they wake up the bed of some first year who doesn't have a car at the school to transport them there.

The true advantage of "the just another wash party" is that it radically reduces the amount of planning and logistics that you have to do for the party. And since I am still advocating that more planning be done for alumni events Saturday afternoon and potentially Friday night, the more time you waste on an event that, hopefully, everyone will be too drunk to remember, the less time you will have towards making it an alumni WEEEKEND. Honestly, once the banquet starts running, the more you can transfer responsibility to the alumni and members themselves, the less headache for you.

Fourth
Given that I am advocating a party that goes until at least 2:30 am, I hope no one is trying to organize a football game against the jeff. And if they are, it better not start until 2 or 3 pm. I would personally prefer to see a alumni tavern breakfast scheduled for 1 or 2 pm Sunday anyway.

-- End --

Nada Surf

As the express train passes the local
It moves by just like a paper boat
Although it weighs a million pounds
I swear it almost seems to float

And as we pass by each other
Our heads all full of bother
We can't look, we can't stop
We can't think, we can't stop
Because we're stuck in our own paths
And it's the way it always lasts
And I need something more from you

NYC Tour

My friend Judson came up to NYC this weekend. Here is the short list of what we did. Wall Street, NYSE, Observed a Sierra Mist commercial, Battery Park, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island (via the Circle Line), lunch at Spice, Central Park (from Columbus Circle up to Sheep Park), Times Square, dinner at Wendy's, collapse after that. Grand Central Station, UN HQ, Yale Club, Subway, Street Bazaar, Home for me to do work for the rest of Sunday.

There was a digital camera involved, so there may one day be pictures for all this.

Bored?

Play with The Game of Life for a while. It's in Java, which means it is platform independent.
Some hackers want to use the 'glider' symbol to label themselves on the internet.

Either way you fall on that issue, I wanted to add this post because I was able to generate a "large exploder" once by accident last night using a design that looked like a set of steps. The nice thing about the java is that it will set up some of the cooler moving, but stable populations for you. Then you can just sit back and watch generations rise and fall. Feel free to just watch the blank screen. It beats working.

Read about truth, justice and the American way. Also, you can learn a little about trivia night and about my trip to Richmond. Okay, not that much about Richmond, but it would have been awesome if you could have read about it.

My Dock Documented
I recently made a rather large change to the Dock on my computer. For almost 15 months, I had it placed on the bottom of my laptop screen. Sure, down made sense at the time, but this laptop is widescreen. Horizontal space is cheap real estate. I can now see more of most web pages that are built for 800 or 1024. Anyway, don't expect too many updates, but I want people to know everything.

School of Rock, Nada Surf, Bubba Ho-Tep, Kill Bill, and whatever.

Random Notes

Quick Report:

School of Rock: Good, will not see in the theater again, may not purchase the DVD

Bubba Ho-tep: Great, will not see in the theater again, will buy the DVD under most circumstances (Praying for Bruce Campbell commentary)

I'd probably give SoR 7 points and BHT 8 points. I'll eventually make more comprehensive updates in my content section. I think the key to both movies was that I wanted to see them. This summer, I was at movies a lot because I wanted to kill time. That was a mistake because I means that I hate the movie when it doesn't make time go faster. Unless it is at the Byrd, then it is awesome.

Oh and not related to movies, but because I like making links, Judson got the finger from three separate strangers on Friday. Feel free to do your best to make Monday his new record, if you don't know him but want to make an insulting gesture at someone.

Slow News Day

Having done not much other than reading and watching televised football, I can not offer much to report.

I went to see Stella do a taping for Comedy Central last night with a bunch of people. It's the kind of thing I should write up for my content section on my personal website. Maybe if I can find someone who took pictures.

I also have seen Nada Surf and Ozma since I last posted anything relevant. Nada Surf is awesome, if you had forgotten them since their song Popular. They didn't even sing it. It was a little sad to realize they had totally moved on, while I am still partially in the mid-90s. I will also post the standard concert review at some point in the near future. I have pictures promised me by my friend Joi. Joi was actually at both events. And she danced at both. Some people. Oh, and Chris and Kristen came to visit. They were totally 6 hours late and still came to meet a few of the stragglers at my friend's birthday party.

I leave for DC on Wednesday and return on Wednesday. I am going to try the insane trip. We will see if it works. It probably will not, because it requires me to be up at 5 am instead of 8 am. Seems like it could be a pain. I may change my mind tomorrow. It's not really important what I do as long as I am in the right place at 10 am. I'll keep you informed.

Entry From Class

As my professor begins another lecture, let me give an update of the last 24 hours. No, nothing impressive, but I did play Civilization 2 again. I got back from Trivia Night and did nothing law related, so I am going to call this a comedy entry and try and give you some moments of humor.

First, there was a fire alarm at 6 pm in the law school. I went out a firedoor and another alarm went off. You know, one of those "Fire Exit Only: Do not exit, alarm will sound" sort of deal. So, basically, the door isn't connected to the actual fire alarm. I always assumed that those doors were just like giant fire alarms. You use the door, then everyone has to leave. It's a deliberate act, and you would assume that everyone would be better off knowing when someone found it necessary to use such a door. Not true. Anyway, when the second alarm went off, I started moving faster. I wasn't sure if this was because I thought the fire had gotten WORSE at the exact second that I choose to open the door or because I always run when i set off an alarm. Oh, I happened to be the only one in a classroom at the time, which is why I was the only one to use this particular emergency exit. In case you were reading this and thinking "You go to a law school with 1200 people and you were the ONLY one trying to leave the fire?" As Rob pointed out when I ran into him on the sidewalk (I wasn't really running from the alarm, but for my life), a fire in a building with tons of lawyers is a goldmine waiting to happen. I wish that our school would wait to burn down until after they finish the next school.

Fire ended. IPELS Speaker Event began. Nothing amazing. I printed up the programs at the last minute because no one else had done so. The panelists were pretty tame for the first forty minutes...but then the gloves came off when someone wanted to know if it was better to be at a small firm or a big firm. One dude totally said big, and another totally said small. And then they kept going, interrupting each other, rolling eyes, and basically fighting the urge to rip their opponent's spinal column out. True story. Except for the part where I said that they wanted to rip out the spinal columns. I don't actually know that, but I think i can assume it. There was so much cheese left over after the reception that the board had to really chow down on the crackers and stuff.

Then I stayed up late playing video games.

This morning I woke up, showered, and put on my clothes. There are still some hints of vomit on our bathroom wall, from my roommate's tuesday night. I will probably clean it tonight. I have guests showing up on Friday. We are going to go to a cowboy bar. It is called

Doc Hollidays
141 Ave A, New York, NY

There is a girl at my law school who is turning 23. Come wish Lesliee a happy birthday and see how a country bar reacts to a sudden influx of lesbians and law students (yes, those are two of Lesilee's two core groups of friends. I wish I was in both, just to make the obvious joke). I'll try and be there by 10. So that news counts as potential comedy. As does the taping of a Stella Comedy special this Saturday. Lots of potential comedy.

Final bit about today, I have now bought a muffin twice this month at a NYU food court. Both times I have paid with my 'campus cash' which is magically held in my ID. Both mornings, the same woman has taken my ID and then handed it back saying "You look different from your ID" Both times I have replied basically "Yeah, I guess I got old" and she has laughed politely both times. I wonder if she says that to everyone. I wonder how I have changed. I think it is the amount of gray in my hair. The photo was also taken on a humid day in August last year. At a Kinko's in Charlottesville on Barracks Road. Perhaps I look moist in the photo is all that I'm saying. The end.

TONIGHT'S AGENDA: NADA SURF and OZMA.

Weekend Recap

My Train departed Penn Station, NYC at 4 pm on Friday. It then arrived at Union Station, DC around 7:20. Lyle, Chris, and Kate were there to meet me and had a car for me to toss my bags into for the evening. The train ride was uneventful. I did about 30 minutes worth of reading, listened to music, and generally sat on a train. The car did not have electricity for the laptop, so when the battery got low I went down to the cafe car and plugged it in. It was actually much easier to do homework in the cafe car, so perhaps I will try and spend more time in there on the way back home on Monday night (not likely!)

We went out to dinner in Dupont Circle, eating at Lyle's favorite Chinese restaurant. Praveen and Kristen then joined us for a quick round of shuffle board bowling. I lost. The basic point of the game is to have your puck end up as close to the very end of the board as possible without going off the edge. Much like Bochi, the other person is also trying to get closest to the goal state while simultaneously trying to knock your pucks off the raised platform. Here is a picture of what a table looks like.

After the game, I went over to Voit's place for eventual sleep. Chris was without power, and Lyle was going to go crash at his friend Stone (Rob)'s house. Since my stuff was in Chris (Kate)'s car, we had to take the metro back to Union Station. Then all six of us road in the car to Lyle's car. This portion of the ride had me in the way back. Then Lyle drove me, Praveen and Kristen to Praveen's car. Praveen then drove us to pick up Tonic Water and fulfill any other request from Matt. Matt's apartment building was huge. We found our way up to the sixth floor, where I played poker until about 3 am. I won about four dollars off a five dollar buy-in. It was nothing but Texas Hold-em. Gil and Patrick and some dude named Adam played with us. Gil and Adam were the other two people who ended up ahead for the evening. I then crashed on the futon and emerged the next morning around 10.

Matt and I went out to find a map for his fall, Arby's for the stomach, and then a place called Courthouse off a metro stop that was willing to show us "Lost in Translation." Lyle, Stone, and Brent joined us. Those three potential lawyers had been hanging out for the day. We bought tickets after deciding that we would just call all our other friends and have them meet us at the metro stop here to have dinner at 6:30. We called cellphones and left messages. We then went into the movie theater and watched the film. It was good. It was also strange because there were NO ads, NO previews, and they almost gave us NO credits. I think they must have published times in the paper that underestimated the length of the film. Oh, and the girl was pretty with pink hair. Who would have guessed?

And the Movie ends. We say goodbye to Lyle's friends. Restaurant searching results in finding a place called Rhodehouse Grille. Lyle and I then let Matt leave us briefly and we amused ourselves in a bookstore. The bookstore was a poor man's tower. It did not have much of a selection beyond the most popular items, but I assume they could order anything you wanted. Also, their comparative advantages were in book signings. They will have Dave Berry signing his new book on Thursday (5 days from this entry). So they obviously have a lot of connections in the right places. There are lots of books that I have not yet read, and it seems likely that, given my current behavior, I will not read them in the next 24 months. I'd blame myself, but why should I let society dictate my definiton of well-spent leisure time. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch TV.

This picture of the restaurant is slightly outdated. They have changed their sign. Standard 7 dollar burgers, 4 dollar beers. Praveen, Rich, Kristen, Chris, Chad, and Kate joined us for dinner. Hillary never returned my phone call. We all ate, then we all made our way to Rich's townhouse. He had quite a set up. Projection screen TV, Xbox, Tivo, etc. Foosball table, porch, stuff. It was awesome. I won and lost several foosball games. I watched UHF on the big screen, and we played Halo for a while. Life was good. My other options would have been to drive down to a Pirate party or go to a party that involved giving the host more than I was willing to give. So I elected to stay. Matt went to the other party with some kind of malt. I'm sure it was fun, but Halo was also fun back at our party. The option of Cville was tempting, but it would have involved an extra two hour drive each way, some trip time to collect an overnight bag. Generally, lacking my own car was putting me at the 'mercy' at the goodwill of others, and as such, the simpler my needs, the less I needed to ask for others to do. Sure, I wasn't the only one who wanted to visit Cville, but such a visit would have taken some amount of effort that I just did not have the strength to give at the moment. Besides, I am going to seem so much cooler if I only show up once a semester.

I then returned to take advantage of Voit for one final night. He then helped me move into my hotel. Here is the bed I will sleep in tonight. Also, click here if you want to try and explore the rest of my room.

Tomorrow I have several interviews and a train ride home. Perhaps I will post again tonight if I have a swell dinner. This hotel has high speed internet, which allowed me the opportunity to search high and low for these photographs. So enjoy! Or Not.

Question

Assume the hurricane is going to hit NYC and the power is going to go out again. How much water could I purchase at one time before it would seem inappropriately cautionary? 2 gallons? One big jug? I figure if I purchase two gallons for like 3 bucks today, I won't look like one of those people who panics at the last minute and everyone mocks. But I don't want the clerk to know what I am doing, so maybe I will try and look dehydrated at the counter. Or wear my running shoes.

As a side note. I live in a building that requires electricity to pump the water up to our floor, so no power means no shower. (Rhyme!) also no drinking water. Also, as the last outage demonstrated, the Village is basically last on the priority list for Con Edison.

Of course, nothing may happen THIS TIME. If so, I'll just pour out one of the gallons for my dead homies. I wonder if Johnny Cash likes water in the gutter.

Both Journals Updated.
Duh It's Easy to Do. I am planning on going to more events, but I have all these trips to law firms. They aren't really picture or content worthy, so a lot of my time is being spent in boring ways.

Updated Bookmarks and Playlist.
Learn about what I am doing, and if you saved the old ones, you can see how I've changed in almost a month.

Wet Hot American Summer.
I found some pictures taken by David Wain and put them up to let you know where I was sitting for the movie. I may go again this weekend, but don't expect pictures or a write up, I imagine it will be the same. I may just add something to the bottom of this page.

Just got back from Williamsburg (No, not that one)

Tonight, thanks to a law school friend named Liz, I was finally able to visit Williamsburg, a subsection of Brooklyn. And it was for a party, so that makes it less lame than if I had just been looking to go there so I could put a checkmark on some map of the city. And yes, I think anyone who keeps a map with pins in it sucks. You should be keeping a webpage with an image instead. That's cool.

So, back to the story at hand. It turned out to be a costume party filled with people who were not law students. I almost cried because of the latter fact. And then, one of the guys owned a G5 and I needed to change my jeans, which I had worn only because Liz said she was wearing jeans and I did not want to rock the boat. All of these kids owned macs. There was a mac playing the music for the party. And I am currently writing this on a mac. everything was perfect. Except...bum bum bum...it wasn't!

Cut to commercial.

Anyway, even the mentally divergent can tell you that it is the L Line that takes you out to WIlliamsburg if you are trapped in boring old Manhattan. After getting off, we then walked four blocks or so to this party location. Liz walked with precious pizza, me with my mind blissfully unaware that it was to be a costume party (strictly enforced by the hostess Holly, who was a beer fairy, or something. She had on wings and lots of beer related items. That's all I can say. I took no pictures). Arriving at the apartment locatednext to the party, my mind hoping that my Satan is a Nerd shirt would make people want to talk to me even though I didn't have any free pizza. Liz distributed the pizza to people like her boyfriend, and was the instant hit. I learned someone's name, and then forgot it. Such is life. The first thing I experienced, beyond the aforementioned short introductions, was getting a piece of cloth placed in my lap. Almost simultaneously, I was told by who I think was Holly's boyfriend that i should 'figure something out' so I would be properly costumed by the start of the party. This dude had used a similar piece of cloth to create a cape. Which ruled out me being able to use the cloth for a cape. As people stood around talking about costumes, I realized that *I* had just been to a costume party and was free to steal ideas.

OR WAS I?

YES! And my previous weekend had been filled with the best party ever. A party called "a midnight showing of the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer". I already knew who I was going to be. And I also already knew that a party with such a long name would never fly in real life, but in a blog, anything is possible. So...here is a picture of who I was for the night.

And it was good. Anyway, I left around 12:15 only because I already made plans to watch the UVa football game tomorrow at noon, and I knew that a trip back from WIlliamsburg would take over 30 minutes. And it did. And now I have time to write a journal entry and get some sleep. Oh, and I only drank Brooklyn Lager while I was there. No reason to not do as the Romans do, even when you are so far from Rome. Nothing else important happened. I wrote "Kiss the cook on the makeshift apron only to make people feel strange. I still own it, so perhaps I will break it out next weekend. Cloth lasts more than a week right? I hope Holly's boyfriend didn't want the cloth back.

PS. Anyone know what happened to the Romans? Did the Italians eat their souls and gain their power? I only ask because I had this conversation about 8 hours ago and do not feel that it has been resolved.

PPS. I got a piece of cloth. My friend was given an entire hip outfit to wear (because she was the same size as Holly). Should I have been insulted?

News of Note

My roommate reports that he was sexually assaulted by a transvestite at a club last night. I can guarantee that it was not me. I have several witnesses that will place me out on a Balcony at midnight, having just attempted to watch Army of Darkness without feeling like a nerd. Yes, it failed. Anyway, I just wanted to say "So alive this city!" (Note to self: Avoid mistaking men for women and visa versa.)

I leave for DC tomorrow afternoon. Missing class is going to be some kind of beautiful dream. Now I just need to sucker my friends into providing me with the notes from those classes.

Labor Day Weekend

Having never had a real forty hour a week job during the labor day weekend, I have no clue how it must feel to be so greatly rewarded. Although, I get the feeling that my first job at a law firm would necessarily not give me such a three day vacation even if most of the country shut down. The phrase billable hours has entered my lexicon without any sort of catchy jingle or commercial campaign. I hope that I can avoid saying it to too many people who are not lawyers. It sounds strange at this point.

Second of all, to all you Nosy Parkers in the crowd, I have scheduled a trip down to DC for this upcoming Tuesday. Let's assume that you live in DC. Here is what I would say to you. "You can contact me anyway you please if you want to try and eat dinner with me. I have interviews all day Wednesday, but as long as I am in bed by 1 am on Tuesday, I shouldn't mind your company at all." Then we would laugh, laugh, laugh. Since I know more people in the area than could possibly read this, I will be calling them up. It is always strange to have to tell people "PS. I am going to try and invite other people as well, and even though you might not know them, it is not like either YOU or PERSON X is getting in my way. I would like to see everyone." Then we hang up the phones, possibly simultaneously.

Thirdly, to all you people in New York City, I am quietly starting to post my activities on Friendster.com in advance. If you read this, and want to know about stuff and junk, you should try and join the service. I haven't had anyone start stalking me yet, so I can say that it is unlikely that anyone will take notice of you, ugly. Time for me to sign off for a while. I should try and get some homework done before I start dreaming about my train ride on Tuesday.

nothing special

Classes start on Wednesday. I predict a slight drop in entries, and then a real burst in comedy entries once I get bored with school again in mid-september. I have purchased something to block out the sun, a can to hold refuse, and other small items that do not even merit descriptions. I have purchased very little else in the past few days. I remember eating at a place called Acme, and generally sitting around the apartment. I hung up some old pictures, printed out a copy of my schedule, and generally tried to get things together.

Law related - Moot Court training is tomorrow. I need to schedule two DC callbacks. I need to make sure they happen after Sept 4th, since there is a 'how to do callbacks' session. I know the session will be common sense and nothing amazing, but I might as well get a quick review. I have to print out my syllabi in order to prepare for my class on Wednesday. My schedule is very narrow. basically, there is one class that doesn't fit into the narrow band between 10:30 and 2 pm. So 80% of the time I am done with class by 2, if not by noon. I probably need to consider a targeted mailing to firms in DC. If I only have two places, there is a good chance that I will not have an offer by the end. So, that's it. Nothing major.

I may go see the US Open, but the window is shrinking, I think. I may go see some comedy shows, but not for a while. I do plan on seeing Wet Hot American summer over labor day weekend. I am not going to be denied that visual pleasure. I've only been to two films where the director was also there, and both weren't terrible. So this one will be awesome, I'm sure! Or not.

I just saw Tom Tomorrow

After finishing #14 of 34, I got Tom Tomorrow to sign his book just 20 blocks or so from my house. Now it is time to go find a soda and research the names/activities of the next nine of my stupid firms.

Anyway, as you will notice, there is a link to him on the side of this blog!
