WEP - Windfall Elimination Provision:  The WEP reduces the Social Security benefit for retired and disabled workers receiving government pensions, i.e., a pension from non-SS-covered employment.

GPO - Government Offset Provision  A government pension is a retirement benefit from non-Social Security-covered employment for a state or local government. The GPO reduces your Social Security survivor or dependent benefit.

The Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) of the federal Social Security Act penalize people who have dedicated their lives to public service by taking away benefits they have earned. The WEP causes people to lose up to sixty percent of the benefits they earned themselves.
