HISTORY DETECTIVE

Alan (wearing his "other" hat as the internationally known "Dummy Doctor") appeared as a "guest expert" on an episode of the PBS series HISTORY DETECTIVES. The program segment revolves around an interesting search concerning the origins and provenance of a 90 year old ventriloquial dummy, purporting to be directly related to Edgar Bergen's famous "Charlie McCarthy". You'll have to tune in to see the results of this splintery genealogy search......check your local PBS listings for frequent repeat airings in the coming months.

on PBS stations in the early part of 2000, continues to air on

of the famous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr).
In this film (shot on location in May of 1999), Alan portrays Vice President AARON BURR in re-enactments of the events leading up to the famous duel with Hamilton (in which Hamilton died) The first person narratives (taken from Burr's own writings) are read by actor Brian Dennehy. Be sure to check local listings for exact time and channel for frequent repeat broadcasts!

Alan was also recently on television with three commercials: the first is a commercial for WENDY's RESTAURANTS (in Spanish!) , in which he portrays a corporate C.E.O. with stage fright attempting to give a company report to a group of perplexed employees.
Other recent TV spots are a pair of network promos for COMEDY CENTRAL, one of which is available for viewing here as a Quicktime video (2 mb file)
(The Quicktime Player for both Windows and Macintosh is available here)

From 1989 to 1996, Alan provided the voice of "Tex Boy" in the award winning and now classic children's TV series, SHINING
TIME STATION, which was seen nationally in first run and repeat episodes for 9 years on
PBS, and later seen in reruns on cable TV, first on the NICKELODEON channel and subsequently on the FOX FAMILY CHANNEL.
The show featured George Carlin, Ringo Starr, Didi Conn, Thomas The Tank Engine, and The FLEXITOONS as "The
Juke Box Band.".
Other past TV credits include The WEEKLY READER series, K-IDS TV (on Showtime) as the voice of "Buddy Bear" and guest cameos on the D.J. KAT Show (Fox) and THE BUGS BUNNY 50th Anniversary Special (CBS).
Alan may also be seen in a starring role in a special film for the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY entitled THE RIDICULOUS HISTORY OF TOBACCO. It is available in many school and public libraries, and still available for order from the American Cancer Society as well.
Alan lent his
internationally recognized expertise in the field of ventriloquism
to yet another feature film project, entitled DUMMY. In
addition to designing and constructing the film's title character,
he served as the ventriloquial technical advisor on the project
and spent several weeks coaching the film's star (academy award
winner Adrien Brody) in the techniques of ventriloquism and puppet
manipulation. The film was shot on location in and around New
York City. Alan also appears in the film. The film opened in New
York and Los Angeles in September, and has now been released on
DVD homevideo. The film is distributed by Artisan Entertainment
(a division of Lion's Gate).
"VARIETY" covers "DUMMY"
Alan's picture taken at the premiere of DUMMY (alongside the film's title character...his creation), made VARIETY's September 15th 2003 issue...see the photo and article here! Alan was brought in by the film's producers and director to personally teach the art of ventriloquism to Adrien Brody for this production.
Alan has also been in the recording studio on a number of exciting musical projects, including two for composer and musical director PETER JONES (protege of and archivist for the great musical theatre living legend Stephen Sondheim) ; in the first, a new musical adaptation of PEYTON PLACE, Alan portrayed the deceased "Lucas" , revisiting his wife in a ghostly musical vision.
The most recent Peter Jones project was a new work (in collaboration with Dianne Hinson) entitled DO-JANE, featuring Alan as a drill seargent in what could very well go down in musical theatre history as the most surreal 8 minutes of show music ever recorded!
Still in the works is FISHFACE (working title).... a collection of original music by Alan Semok & Joe Barbarotta which has been a "work in progress" for more than 20 years, with very limited distribution of various versions.
Yet another limited edition release with some new material (this time on Compact Disc) will appear on the AEOLIPILE label sometime soon.
(no flying pig jokes, please...)
Alan is known internationally as THE DUMMY DOCTOR.
