A Farewell to Folk

The last of the original Carter Family is dead. Janette Carter, daughter of A.P. and Sara, and niece to "Mother Maybelle" Carter, died Sunday, January 22.

Some of you may think you haven't heard of the Carter Family. Don't be embarrassed; you probably have. Let me toss out a name for you: June Carter Cash. Ring any bells? June was Maybelle's daughter. A song? How about "Wildwood Flower?" Just about everyone's covered that one, from Johnny Cash to 10,000 Maniacs.

The Carters traveled around singing and playing the music of Appalachia, and in the process, had a huge effect on both country and folk music. Many of these old folk ballads would probably not survive today if not for this amazing family.

The last few years have seen the original generation of Carters slowly picked away, and our world is a poorer place for it. On the other hand, I can only imagine the joyful music that's got to be almost audible around that gravemound.

Here are links to a couple of stories about Janette Carter, and her amazing work to keep Appalachian music alive.:

Many Carter Family albums are available through iTunes, so you can hear what you've missed.

Hail to the Carters!

(Sorry if this is disjointed; I'm all sad and stuff.)
