News or Narcissism?

I created a category in my blog software a while back, but never really got around to using it. Now that I've got the new pictures uploaded, I figured I could at least break it in.

I never have any problem griping about things, as ya'll may already know. Normally, I try to find some meaning in it (hence the blog title "Asahel's Search For Meaning"). Occasionally, though, something bothers me that isn't just a metaphor for some deep-seated issue, or else the issue is so deep-seated that I don't even recognize it. Sometimes things make me angry, not because of some resonance within myself, but just because those things are very very stupid. And then, I just need to bitch.

For example, this evening I went out to eat. I got my food and sat down near a television to watch the news, to hopefully learn what was going on in the world. I was sadly disappointed.

The television was tuned to the Fox News Channel, which gave me some hope, based on the name, that I would see news. Instead, there were 4 commentators discussing news media's coverage of recent news. Let me restate that for clarity: They weren't telling the news; they were talking about the way the reporters had reported on previous news.

Desperate for attention much? I mean, we all know weathermen are desperate for attention; otherwise they wouldn't go stand out in the middle of a hurricane and try to speak coherently. At least, though, they're trying to cover a news story when doing so.

On the other hand, a news segment on whether the New York Times should apologize to Geraldo for claiming he shoved a rescue worker out of the way for a better camera angle during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is just self-indulgent navel-gazing, by a news media that probably shouldn't have left federal controls. Newscasters now are no longer content to report the news; they must BE the news.

Here's my tip for the news agencies: stop talking about your colleagues, get the camera off of your own mug every now and then, and actually report what's going on, because most of us don't care to hear your opinion nor the soap opera account of your occupation. We want news, which is why we tuned in to a "news channel" in the first place.

So that's the idea for this folder. Feel free to disagree, and comment in the comments section or link from your own blog.

Thanks to Boars Heart for the spellling correction on Narcissism.
