Here in Korea, there is less than an hour left in
2005. I just returned to my room with a container full of hot wings, in
preparation for... whatever.
I don't
make New Year's resolutions, generally. I find it egregious that, if change is
required in one's life, to wait until an arbitrary date which alters the way one
signs checks. If change is necessary, it should be done promptly, and not left
to be buried.
It snowed here for three
weeks straight, almost non-stop. To the best of my knowledge, we had over 50
inches of snow. At times during the day the roads would melt from the traffic,
and at night they would freeze back, into harder, slicker and smoother rivers of
ice. I was lucky; I only fell on my ass once. At least one person had to have
surgery on a broken leg, and many are now limping because of similar
misadventures.
The snow struck in the
middle of a lot of base improvement -- water pipes were being replaced,
underground cable laid, etc. Warning barriers and road cones were soon
engulfed, leaving walking an even MORE hazardous activity. Roofs that had been
in danger of leaking... caved in. Tree branches that should have been cut...
fell.
If I WERE in the habit of
making New Year's Resolutions, perhaps I'd resolve to not put off things that
need changing until the next New Year. Attack your problems as they become
available, for you never know when circumstance may make them
worse.
