It's a rather horrifying New Age belief -- the
gods are defined by how we worship them and what we believe them to be. I
think the idea was probably spawned by science fiction/fantasy writers. Just
thing of how split personality they would be
then!
Maybe I just have an overactive
imagination. You know that entry I wrote the other day? The one about choosing
Asatru? In there I wrote about the Mount Fuji view of dietyhood -- that all
gods are different ways of looking at one great big lump of deity.
Put these two ideas together and
things get truly scary. I imagine gods being sucked backwards into an amorphous
blob of celestial power. Gradually losing form to combine into some large,
Jell-O like primal ooze. Imagine the looks of terror on those immortal
faces.
But take heart! Together we can
keep this from happening to the Aesir and the Vanir. Stand fast against
encroaching New Age ideas, because if they are right, we are the only thing
standing between the Eldest Kin and immortality as The
Blob.
(This was just a random thought I
figured I'd share, so that maybe I could get it out of my head. I believe I've
warned my readers in previous entries that my mind can be a very scary place.
Mainly today I'm rewriting that aforementioned entry; it's good, but it could be
a lot better.)
