Taking Care of Business

There are a lot of things we need to do in this life. Most of them involve taking care of something, somebody or somebodies.

For me, it boils down to this:

1) Take care of yourself
2) Take care of your family
3) Take care of your community
4) Take care of everybody else.

Taking care of yourself

If you don't take care of you, you're not going to be in a position to help anyone else. You have to ensure that your basic needs are met before you can take care of the needs of anyone else. Or you should. There are lots of kids out there trying to be parents when they don't even know how to provide for themselves yet.

The basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter. These are met not just through having money, but also through the responsible and reasonable use of that money. When these needs are met someone has the potential to be happy and healthy. Once that condition is reached, the individual can focus on...

Taking care of your family

How am I defining family here? I'm calling it a group of people with which you feel a kinship bond, regardless of whether they are blood kin, an Asatru Hall or Kindred, a hippie commune, or a strange religious sect that hoards guns and purple Kool-Aid. It's not just a household -- it's family.

One may have several families that they're a part of, each with its own level of needs. For example, I am a son in the family of my parents. I am a member of Keeper of Seasons Hall, with the familial connections implied there. There are a few other people that I refer to as "bro" (and in case you missed the previous article, I take that word very seriously), and, on deployments I and my teammates have to function as a family. In each of these family units, I have a different place and different levels of responsibility. Once those responsibilities are met, then you can start...

Taking care of your community

Ahhh... philanthropy. Taking care of those beyond your family that you maintain a close relationship with -- either a geographical similarity or some other point in common. For example, doing something for the greater Asatru community would fall into this category, or donating time, food or money to your local food bank, or volunteering as a peer counselor at your high school or college.

This is where I'm finding myself now. I feel I'm taking good care of myself, and am reasonably close to meeting all the responsibilities I have in taking care of my families, and now I have enough of me left over to help take care of my communities. Lately I've been able to take on some extra projects and such. Not really trying to toot my own horn here, so I'll just leave it at that and move on to...

Taking care of everybody else

Most of us never get here. I don't really think I'm consistently here, but I try. This is the kind of thing I do for the Red Cross -- delivering emergency communications, providing relief to disaster victims, and teaching health and safety courses. There's a level of selflessness here; you're doing for people with whom you have no obvious connection.

Anyway, this was just a little food for thought for you guys; wanted to write something to hold you over until I get back to a good schedule. Take care of yourselves and your families, okay? I'll be home soon.
